onthefence, I'm sorry to hear of such a Report, that your CDL school didn't teach you how to shift gears. Why would you go to such a school? It obviously isn't PTDI certified, was it. Yet, you now 'have' a CDL, yet can't drive. What a crock of a BS school, my friend. You made a bad choice of truck driver training school!
Tell us all here how much you had to pay for this crap school, and the name of it, so others won't be so screwed in the future as you have been screwed over. OK? THAT might be your most important contribution to this website.
As far as 'trying a third time', well, that is your choice. I would guess you won't succeed. I am trying to be logical about it. Not trying to put you down, ok? If it seems I am, well, I'm not. You just made a bad choice of school. You need a good school to teach you the basics of driving. A PTDI school has a minimum number of miles you drive out on the two lanes....yes, driving on a real road.
My school that I went to 9 years ago has 3 miles of 'course' on its 40 acres ( I think that is what it was) site. We had 9 trucks or so , Freightliners, and they were 10 speeds. Here is a link: http://www.auto-driving-school.com/oklahoma-driving-schools/oklahoma-truck-driving-school/index.php
The main link to the school is here: http://www.tdt-ok.com/training.html It's called 'Central Tech'. Check out their link 'View Practice Range Map'. lol. You can putt around and shift gears a few times, trust it. Maybe 20 mph on the back side.
They take roadtrips too, from Drumright, OK. towards Tulsa, or back west to Stillwater and up north to near Tonkawa, Ok, too. I did 334 miles, loaded, and 564 miles overall, according to this old Grade sheet of mine. Total hours of course I did was 227.25 hours. 93.1 Skills and 95.2 Academics was my grades.
It is backed by the State of Oklahoma, and is a great truck driving school. It takes one month,,,just one month, and you WILL be able to drive a 10 speed!!! I'd bet any 8 week w/trainer thingy would be cut to 4 weeks at most, w/trainer, after going to Central Tech.
Central Tech is no 'funny business', like the crap school you got. Sorry about the bad luck. Ya gotta do your Research out there, people.
I think my class had 18 students; had 1 from Washington, D.C., several from Texas, New Jersey,2, and several other states, tho most from Oklahoma. I see it is now $4,500 for out of state. $2,500 instate. Yikes. They do have fairly cheap apts that you can rent, too. See the links. It's a small town; a couple thousand people at most.
It looks like you are screwed tho...I mean, best of luck that they will accept you as a trainee, tho you are supposed to HAVE some driving experience. You don't. IF tho, it was a PTDI accredited school, you might get a lawyer. No need tho,,,it is a 'CDL factory', or they would have taught you something. You get what you pay for, friend. You thought it would be 'easy' to get a CDL, and a job. Only thing is, that school should be put out of business by the State in which you live, if they didn't make you do several hundred miles of driving, imo.
It is amazing to me people will spend more or equal amount of money for something only to learn that there really IS skill involved in being a Safe and productive driver. It ain't about 'what you can get away with'... I actually don't feel sorry for anyone at all who takes this 'easy way out'. That said,,,now I'm laughing my ### off at another one of these stories! Good luck tho!
