Unfortunately many drivers today don't master the vehicle they are driving! New drivers mainly lack the experience. Older drivers sometimes get a burr in their saddle because they don't shift gears anymore and hate the truck they drive and refuse to master it. The new Volvo I'm driving has a crap engine brake and takes a little more care managing your stopping power. The '19 Freightshaker I got out of had a great engine brake!

The Junkliner Crapcadias I had at Creaffer, it didn't have manual mode, but regardless of whether or not you had the jake turned on, the jake would still come on 2 or 3 mph over the max governed speed.

Two weeks ago I made my brakes work hard from Vail to Denver. Normally I go down mountain passes with my engine brake only. This time there was stop and go traffic most of the way and I noticed zero deterioration in my brakes. There have also been other incidents were I had to come to a complete stop going 65+ down a 7% grade and it was no problem at all.

Really makes me wonder what people are doing to cause their brakes to fail... That Denver crash from a few years ago is still in my memory every time I go down that pass.

But you see poorly maintained braking systems everyday.
And even the best system can get hot enough to fade to zero braking effectiveness if driven incorrectly.
