My husband started his own company a few months back after being an owner operator leased on with a company for 15+ years. He now has his own authority and we are trying to figure out how to make this a profitable business. His is the only truck in the business and the plan is to keep it that way. We are using InternetTruckStop (?) as a loadboard and have quite a few contracts with many different brokers at this point. The problem is, he is constantly finding low paying loads and having trouble getting back home every week. I've been reading about freight lanes, but I'm not sure what this means. We live in southern ky which is usually his starting location since there is quite a bit of freight going south out of our town. He tries to end in central ky where he doesn't have a lot of deadhead. It seems like everytime he sets up loads for the week, someone cancels and he has to scramble to find another load that pays even less. Most of his loads are paying between $1.20- 1.60 a mile. Does anyone have any idea on how to make this more profitable or how to figure out a good freight lane (or what that is)? I'd appreciate any help.

dry van loads?

You've got it. Dry van loads.
-
You need to talk to BBB on here ( Bad Bill ) he may be able to point you in the right direction

I've seen dry loads going for over 2.15-2.45 what brokers are you messing with ?
-
OMG. There are so many broker agreements right now. He usually finds a couple of loads a week on ITS and the rest are from CHRobinson. I know their pay isn't the best but they do have a lot of loads out of our area. Other than that, Coyote usually tries to find loads but he only hauls for them every couple of weeks. Let's see. There is also Crescent and UTI.

#1 STOP HAULING CHEAP FREIGHT. Really why would you even touch freight for less than you was making leased to a company. #2 STOP HAULING FOR THE BROKERS HE HAVE BEEN HAULING FOR. Why the have him marked as a cheap carrier and will never offer him high paying loads. Dont take the first thing offered unless its paying execellent I mean if its short haul $4+ a mile or $2+ long haul. No disrespect but brokers lets say they get an account that has three loads a day from and to the same place that pays an average of $3.50 a mile well they will pay their regular carriers close to the $3 mark because the other two loads will be picked up by some dumb butt that will haul it for free(meaning anything under $2) Stop calling/using the brokers you been using because they have you marked as a cheap carrier. Find new brokers to haul for and dont take anything for under $2 a mile even if its just two pallets. If you gonna take a loss do it hauling a empty trailer. Cheapest load I have hauled lately was $2.44 a mile and as high as $1500 for a 301 mile and get this a $1600 from TQL for a 4 drop load all in NC picked up in southern VA tuesday done wenesday morning and went home put less than a 1000 miles in and went home with $3100. So I thank all the drivers thats hauling cheap freight that way the brokers can pay me more with out taking a loss
LostOne9, VisionLogistics and Mommas_money_maker Thank this. -
Oh, and he uses Total Quality a lot as well. @PlumCrazy He does negotiate prices often. I guess just getting into doing this we are in a little over our heads. He finds loads from home and then sets up the week to get him back home. A lot of times this means picking up cheap loads. He usually gets a load, if he is lucky 2 loads, a week making a grand and averaging close to $2 a mile once deadhead is included. Thanks for your help. Do you have any suggestions as to brokers to look into?

CHRobinson and TQL are good in my book I have hauled loads for CHR from up in you area paying close to $2.50 a mile that was a year ago dont go that far from home now and only been doing two loads a week and one of them will be with CHR or TQL. I use to run clean out to MS for $2.80-$3.10 a mile and if I couldnt find something for at lease $1.85 back home I would dead head the 6-700 miles back but now when a broker calls me they know I wont take anything under $2. Most of the large brokers can put your MC# in their system and see every load you hhave hauled for them and at what rate. They know where you live and know you will haul cheap to get home. I have done a few load for Coyote and they pay me good. UTI called me one time I told them to loose my number offer me a load paying $1.39. Dont be afraid to push brokers and look at some of the big boys Landstar, CR England, US Express and so on. All of the have the ability to pay good just stand you ground and dont be afraid to say no.

Thanks. That is great to know. A friend told my husband that CH often starts you out below $2 to make sure you will run good before they start offering higher paying loads. Of course, my husband just uses the loadboard to find the loads. But thanks for the insight.
