I like to think I can drive a gas tanker through the belly of Hell on the 4th of July, but I’ve certainly never tore down a Cummins big cam, or any other engine.

BTW, for the wise man the learning never stops. ;)

Me never tore one open yet. But I'm about to get some self learning reverse engineering.
I have tore a 2.0 neon engine down to bare block and scrapped it.

I'm pulling freight every week with a Big Cam, can't say they are the best thing on the road but they are far from the worst too lol. Big question is.... Is it really a 400? You know there's more 69 SS camaro's on the road than GM ever built ;). Tag on my engine says its a 1986 315 HP engine, but it's far from it lol.

Smokincat has good knowledge as well, difference between him and I is.... He pulls a sled with his, I pull freight with mine. You can get good service and decent HP out of a Big Cam if you take care of it. I personally like the fact I can work on my engine for less $$ than I can a 3406 Cat, but both are good engines.

Does it say 400 on the tag, or is that what you are being told? Tag on my engine says its a 315, but I did a complete out of frame rebuild on mine last year, and I can assure you it's no 315 ;). I built my engine back to an Oldskool recipe from a retired Cummins / Cat friend of mine. He built the engines in the trucks I was driving when I started out in 1987, using all factory Cummins parts. All in all they are great engines, like everything else they have limitations.

My dad had big cam 4 cpl 838 formula 315 in a 9670 he averaged 7.0+ over a million miles running the north east and that was a 9 direct with 3.55s

Them old mechanicals get very good economy with a good driver. My dads 93 mack ch600 gets mid 7s and that's on small rubber and 3.91s. He does have a dbl over though .62 od in the big hole. On flat land he'd see 8.0 mpg all day cruising at 62
