This thread is fantastic. Though I cannot relate to the golden days of trucking and the experience of the old hands as I was only born in ‘84. However, Grandad was a trucker from this era in the 1970’s. Used to ride with him along the east coast until being dropped off near home on the interstate and picked up by Dad. I’ll never be able to relate to that era and that breed of driver but I’ve got enough of it in my blood to be at 14 years behind that big wheel.

Reminds me of all the stuff my father used to tell me. He learned to drive when he got drafted to Vietnam. Still drives to this day.

My grandfather on my mothers side is the exact same age and started by hauling milk. He hated my father and told my mother to never marry a trucker.

Both of em told me to never do this. Well I went to school like they wanted but I still ended up following in their foot steps.

I love hearing all these old stories, because I heard stuff like it growing up. My grandfather pulled me aside one day and gave me the advanced logging tutorial. He didn't have Elogs till the mandate came through. So I rode with him and showed him how to use em..... That for me was a very surreal moment. 76 and still driving, both of em.

When I was a kid my grandfather always had to help me get into his old beat up Freightliner cabover. No earthly idea what it was other than freightliner. This was in the 90s.

I drove his old 70s model dodge dump truck before I had a drivers license myself. He would haul loads for farmers in the area on the weekend after his week of hitting the road hauling mail. How that thing is still running I'll never know, but he keeps it in shape.

So where ever you guys are I'll have a cold one for you.

With my propensity to bounce around like a pinball, it might just happen one day.
