Brand new green driver. Training has kicked my ###. I got 48 hours to get this backing down or I'm out. I've put in almost 15 hours off clock practice last weekend so I'm trying my damndest. The first week being new my head was spinning first 3 days. So that was wasted almost. I've made huge progress and then today the wheels fell off. 48 hours to get it right.
I can put it in the hole. And I get the initial set up almost perfect. Its from there to the hole I have problems with
Good luck to you. I don’t know what to say... practice and try to relax a little. That 48 hour deadline kinda sucks.
Small slow corrections and always back to the driver’s side. This only applies to 48’s and 53’s. The further back the tandems, the slower the correction.
I received a tip from a guy I worked with about backing and it helped me tremendously. No matter what type of back you’re doing try to remember pushing your trailer with the steering wheel. What I mean is this. If doing a straight line back and your trailer is about to hit a truck on your driver side you’ll turn the wheel to the left which will push your trailer away from that truck. Same thing if you’re about to hit a truck on your passenger side. Turn your wheel to the right to push away from the truck. If you’re doing a blind side 45 you’ll turn your wheel to the left to start pushing your trailer toward the dock. If you over steer and the trailer moves too far whether it be to your passenger side or driver side remember pushing the trailer with your steering wheel. I know this may be confusing but hopefully it helps.
Watch YouTube videos that may help you visualize what your doing later. 8 years driving and still takes me 30 mins to back some days. Alley dock tight place. Between two trucks I take time.
Go to Walmart and buy a toy semi. No kidding. Practice your back manueveurs with that. You will learn how a semi bends and then from there apply it to your backing. Like another driver said, small corrections. Quarter turns till you are where you need to be then quarter turns to take it out.
