Update:
I have a few thousand miles on it now. It sounded a little too rattley to me, so after a few trips we reset the timing. It is now back stock pin timing with just a hint of advance, and sounds better. It still runs and starts great, no oil leaks, no oil consumption. It's interesting that it has a different sound than our other truck. Still sounds like a B model, but different. Maybe the steel top pistons? Anyway, I am really happy with the engine and truck, and the project was well worth doing. I would love to get it and the other truck meter-timed. I have learned that pin timing and then advancing according to sight is not very precise and I understand why @wore out meter times his engines
@blairandgretchen mentioned a while ago that his mechanic would intentionally slip a new clutch for a bit after installation. Many commented that there was no benefit or need to do this. I was probably stupid by failing to just put a new clutch in while everything was apart, but the clutch we had was not very old and working perfectly last fall when we took the engine out of the other truck, so we went with it.
After we got this truck going you could get the clutch to slip if you walked into it quickly, especially at or below 1500 rpm. However it would not slip, even at full load, if you walked into it slowly and gradually. I was cussing myself again for being cheap. Now, after a few thousand miles, it is no longer slipping. I guess maybe surface rust while sitting unused was the problem? Anyway, maybe there is something to what Blair's mechanic does, and a clutch can be conditioned. Either way, I'm sure happy we don't have to pull the trans and replace it.
I know that most folks would never have the time to dink around with a truck as long as we did with this one. I'm grateful we had the chance and look back at the experience fondly. And, I grin internally every time I hit the start button!Rideandrepair, sawmill, RGN and 16 others Thank this. -
I used to haul something out of a mine out in Utah somewhere to Philadelphia Mississippi. If I could find that place again (they was putting it in chicken feed) that would get me close enough for a steak and a couple beers we could give it a good tune up. I can’t remember the place to save me
