If you are making a right turn, at least with a van trailer, that left rear of the trailer is not visible.

    Yep
I’m amazed that drivers are saying they’ve never heard of backswing and saying it’s not possible .

And even making a right turn . You can’t see it in the mirror

    to the Driver :
I wouldn’t worry about a minor accident , but every company is different .
If there’s no citation and no tow truck and no injury ,it’s a very minor accident .

    Exactly.

    Left turns as well.
Once you start to turn, the opposite side is out of sight.

So why are some people saying that line of sight has no meaning anymore?
Just like saying a pivot point doesn't have consequences with tail swing.

Pulled about every trailer except bull rack. Towed a few as a heavy operator. Towed triples behind wrecker. You could not see the back. But a single van, even a 53' van does not tail swing outside of your turning radius in forward movement.

If you put the tractor in, there is zero reason the trailer should contact anything.

Yes tail swing is real. But not a chance it moves over on non steerable axles and travels outside of the radius you have started with in a forward maneuver.

OK, I think I get it now. But the original discussion was about a hard turn. Not a forward maneuver

I am amazed how many drivers do not get the concept of tail swing. It does not even have to be that much overhang if your a few inches from anything on your left and you basically make a 90 degree right turn, your going to scrape something. Good luck driver. Live and learn. They might not let you go because they are already invested in you.
