Not as much pessimisom as I expected. Wasn't this before the big housing crash or at least soon after it? Things were definitly if not bad, about to get that way. Of course at the time this thread was started I was only considering buying a truck myself. I didn't end up purchasing one until Feb of the following year and then put it to work 5 months later. One thing for sure back when i bought used trucks were a dime a dozen. Doubtful they'll ever be that cheap again but who knows, there seem to be more and more decent deals on used equipment out there now compared to year ago. The last poster to comment on that thread was almost on a roll until:
This is the wrong mindset. Completely wrongheaded. It's possible American gets a premium so they work less for the same amount of gross as Southwest... Not saying that is so, but it is possible.... Sorry if anyone disagrees but that's how I see it. Really that is a poor comparison considering Southwest is, and has been for many years, a very profitable debt free operation - whereas American is at the other end of the spectrum on that.. My point was, if your finances are in order and you have the ability to truly set the rate your truck rolls for you'll never be in a situation where you're worried about losing a day here and there. You'll never see volume, whatever low price they're offering on lots of freight, as a solution to anything. I think the volume idea is crazy talk.
Good money management skills fosters patience, and patience is the key to everything. You will be more aggressive on rates because you have that ability. If them wheels ain't turning that truck ain't making money - mantra of the mileage addicted drivers with bloodshot eyeballs... Once you figure who needs the trucks and needed them yesterday, or even on the spot immediately today.. ..since you're already on good financial standing, well that is when YOU, not they, decide what your truck rolls for. Cause they NEED your truck more than you need them. Granted, not all freight is like this... ...a vast majority it seems isn't, but that is what makes it a challenge and part of the game. If you've got a jet ski payment, a travel trailer payment, 3 car payments, a swimming poool payment, vacaction 4 times a year, etc, etc, etc and you pay for all of this on credit - well, you better get them wheels to turning so you can get to earning asap.... no time for reflection, no time to think... No time to adjust to anything... cause the repo man, he is coming...Container Hauler, volvodriver01, Big Jay and 1 other person Thank this. -
