could be easily done and practical for lightweight loads such as insulation, the challenge might be meeting DOT bumper requirements. I think by the time you come up with something for that you would be better off trading for a 53'

 

4 ft is legal but 5 is iffy. Just buy a long trailer.

 

Now that's slick. Set up the headboard and deck ends so they interlock.
Yes it would only work on light loads, but that's what 53' trailers are for. Take it out n squeeze it back together for heavier products

 

Dude do you really wana risk it.? what if you had a claim on the load and your insurance found out that you didn't tell them a bout that little extension you built and now your deductibles went from $1000/$2500 to infinity or how about getting to be one of those uninsured Drivers do you really wana take that chance?

 

we did this with one of our 48ft drop decks after it was rear ended and considered totalled took the insurance money and had it rebuilt as a 53fyt that was over 2 years ago and it still doing pretty good

as for drive on freight it's tough on the trailer i just loaded a jlg 860 manlift and its supposably 36klbs drove it on and i about had a heart attack watching that 2013 utity step sag in the ### end couldent believe it when i go to unload this thing i will be blocking the DOT bumper
