Hello, could someone explain to me what to expect between a “normal” semi 10spd and what I assume is a medium duty eaton 6spd (it’s a smallish medium duty tanker/fuel hauler).
I have a road test tomorrow for a company and I’m pretty nervous about it because I’ve only driven a 10spd and that was almost 2 years ago because my former company gave me an auto after orientation.
Does the 6spd still need ‘rev matching’ on downshift? Does it shift more like a car with the clutch pushed all the down, or a truck with it only pushed down a tiny bit?
6 speed vs. 10 speed differences

6 spds usually have syncros, more syncros, so you can single clutch it like a 4-wheeler. Floating is not recommended. rev matching helps but it is more tolerant anout it than a 10spd.

You don't float the 6 speeds. But you don't ram them through like a car shifter.
Take a heartbeat or two as you get from one gear to the next with appropriate RPM's which I imagine will be much larger in range than a big truck.
Its taking a nice staffer for a drive test. Im not nervous about that. It's what you do not yet know or have not yet learned is the stressor here.TurtlesLikeI Thanks this. -
Not all 6 or 6+1 have syncros. Double clutch is your friend.

That's the way I drive the wife. I'll be here till beer 30.

Treat it basically the same as a 10 speed. Cept no splitter. Least not on any 6 pack I've seen. Easy money

Eaton synchro 6 has to be used with single clutch like driving a car. It’s is a terrible trans and if it’s just a few years old the synchros will be trashed anyway so either double clutch of float then if the thing is grinding while trying to put into gear

The medium duty 6 speeds that I drove you need to use the clutch.
You need to double clutch and just take your time when you shift and it will fall right into gear.
If you try to shift quickly or you are in a hurry you'll have a problem.
If you know how to drive a manual transmission you won't have any problem. Like I said just take your time and double clutch and everything will work out for you.TurtlesLikeI Thanks this.
