Well, I am getting my C15 put back together with a platinum kit. I was putting the last step on the head bolt torque and had a bolt snap. It was one of the new bolts I just bought from Cat. Soooo, off with the head, and after lots of strong language, I got the broken piece out. So I'm off to Cat to buy another bolt.

I am wondering if the head gasket will be ok to use or if I should get another gasket too?

    Thanks for the help,

    Bill

BTW, the bottom bolt in the pic was an old bolt that I took out, it was NOT used in the rebuild!!

holy moly.....you are using a torque wrench correct?

How far into the sequence are you?

All the other bolts were fine, I went 200, 340, then 340, Cat Moly lube, by the book. Bolt went further than the others on the first 340, but the second round finished it!! I guess its good it broke now than in a week or two!!

Yep, using a calibrated Snap-On torque wrench, I wouldn't think of doing it without!!

where in the head is it I guess is my question....

I'd lean towards just replacing the bolt. But I'd still ask another mech who is into a C15 more than I ever will be.

It was bolt #10 in the torque sequence. All the holes were chased and cleaned.

These things are so touchy with head gasket issues (this was the reason for the O/H!!), I just don't want to do this again anytime soon lol!!

If you havent heated it up yet to seat the gasket, just replace the bolt. Was that a new bolt or one that you reused?

I know cat book says to use moly lube but I used oil on threads. I read of guys snapping bolts due to moly lube binding threads and giving improper torque values. I can't remember which forum(maybe TDG) it was awhile back. Before moly lube they used oil for many years.

Thanks SmokinCat, It was a new Cat bolt, I had to replace 13 bolts due to corrosion pitting.

Thanks W900L, the moly seemed to work nice and smooth, the broken part turned out with a screw driver after I made a slot with a chisel. So I don't think there was any binding. I did read that too, and some recomend regular anti-seize. I figgered that Cat would know best lol!!
