Both of those sound like excellent ideas. I'll get an oil sample and see if I can't find someplace close that has a dyno we could put it on. Any idea how much it typically costs to run a dyno?

I had it done at Cat in Lavergne, Tn a couple of years ago. I can't recall the exact amount. It's a set flat rate maybe around $200 or $300?? call around to see..

I believe the first thing too do is like mentioned earlier is to get a coolant check for additives, and have cat do a oil analisist. If that checks out i would drop the pan and roll in new rod and main bearings for my own piece of mind. While under the engine i would look up in the cylinders and inspect the linners for good crosshatch. Too bad cat doesnt date stamp there rod and main bearings like detroit does. Might sound like alot of work but the crankshaft is the heart of this joker and if anything happens too it then it gets very expensive. what is the engine serial # and ill look at the history of repairs for you and tell you what i think .

Diesel Maniac,
Appreciate it! I don't think the original owner used a CAT dealer after it was out of warranty but the number is 6nz30593 maybe you can find something. -
yeah not too much info , the frt. gearcase looks to have been resealed at about 350k miles and just a few other minor repairs when it was new.

just wondering if any one knows the jake settings on a 6nz 73586 engine
-
Look forward to many more posts from you... -
If its a Jake Brake Compression Brake you have the possiblity to have 4 different settings depending on the model of the Jake Brake installed on the engine and the horsepower rating.
Jake Brake Model # 340C
410 or less hp.......... .037"
435 or more hp........... .033"
375/435 Multi torque...... .033"
Jake Brake Model # 340D
all engines ......... .025"
these measurement have a + or - tolerance of .003"
You could also have a PacBrake brand compression brake, here you have the possiblity of three different settings.
PacBrake Model #'s P39A or P39B.......... .030"
this has a + or - tolerance of .003"
PacBrake Model # P39C............ I don't have the specs on this and you'll need to contact CAT
Now you'll understand why I said it's a loaded questionlow max Thanks this. -
Have you had any dealerships run the VIN or engine serial #?
Just a thought.
I'd put it on a dyno, get some HP and Tq #s, also a blowby test, if it has dirty oil sample it, and if all looks good buy it. -
Sorry about budding in but Mr. haney I would like to talk to you about my ECM.
thanks
