Was curious what everyone's braking technique is on short grades with a cat engine? For me if it's less than a mile I snub it down. If it's 2 miles or less I drop down to 40 and snub from 40 to 45 Jake's on of course. Anything over 2 miles I drop down to 25 so the Jake's fully hold me. I run mostly west coast and there's quite a few short steep grades going through Washington and Oregon and parts of Cali.

I’m just jumping in to listen and see how others do it (I have a 3406E 5EK so I’m sure it is the same)
What is your average gross weight?
D.Tibbitt and Crude Truckin' Thank this. -
I just haul as.s. and hope for the best.
SL3406, Vampire, Keepforgettingmypassword and 8 others Thank this. -

Dude.. not to be a DICK .. but I have never seen a set of Cat Jake's fully hold you back ..
But there's got to be alittle truth to what your saying because unless your a Cat with 9 lives your still alive to post about it ..Vampire, Keepforgettingmypassword, Crude Truckin' and 3 others Thank this. -
Lol, did that once on accident. Trans was on the fritz for awhile and it popped out of gear. Was a pretty scary ride actually. That was in WY years ago.Badmon, Vampire, Crude Truckin' and 2 others Thank this.

Sure, mine will hold me back no problem if I'm going so enough. I just go between 2 and 3 to keep my speed. If weight wasn't as much of a factor on this truck, I would put a klaam brake on it. I love those things.

I would answer that it depends on what you consider acceptable brake lining life. Consistently holding a loaded truck back on steep grades is going to really take its toll on the linings.
The other consideration is how hot are the linings at the bottom? Are leaving yourself in the situation where your brakes have little to offer if you have to stop suddenly? Yes, in days gone by, that was SOP with no Jakes, but depending on traffic conditions, the reduced stopping ability may not be worth the little bit of saved time.Crude Truckin', D.Tibbitt, Oxbow and 1 other person Thank this. -
We just had this discussion couple days ago in another thread.. anyhow.. I have brake savers on both my trucks .. Iam quoting myself.. ( I would give up both my testicles before I would give up my brake saver )Vampire, Crude Truckin', D.Tibbitt and 4 others Thank this.

To me, Jake's with the Klaam is the way to go. However, I don't have the weight to spare on this truck. To me the problem with brakes saver is wear and tear on oil and they are prone to leaks, but they do a good job. Not denying that.Keepforgettingmypassword, Crude Truckin', D.Tibbitt and 1 other person Thank this.
