20 psi on the Jakes isn’t bad. But a switchblade isn’t set up like a true variable turbo. Your better off with what you have both performance and Jake wise

    Oxbow Thanks this.

I had a switchblade with 78mm and wasn't impressed at all, but that was on a B model.

My 6NZ at 475 gets 26 to 30 with stock turbo.

My bad. I wasn't thinking boost with Jakes on.

The stock Jakes on my 3406B never really did much, pretty sure when Cat designed them they figured best to put them on there for the sound. Cat had a “Super Jake” kit that they make for the 3406B, supposedly they are the real deal. I wouldn’t know, the kit was $2,500 back in 1990 when I first heard bout them. I have been running a Cat 6nz in my 359 for the past year. The three stage jake is night and day compared to the 3406B motor. But it’s difficult to compare this tractor’s stopping power bc the auxiliary box kinda changes everything. It’s very different pulling and stopping with the two Trans setup. My KW had same motor and rear setup as the 359 but drove very different. Weight and trailer really makes a large difference when going up and down grades. A van trailer on a windy day is like a huge wind sail that helps slowing drastically.

Ya and I could take that both ways but wonder how he meant it honestly. At either rate the 78 Borg is still a better turbo than the switchblade. I would want a 1.45 exhaust housing on it. If 20 is all he gets on the throttle I agree he has some issues. And those most likely carry over to Jake performance unless it’s a fuel issue

    Oxbow and shooter19802003 Thank this.

That's how I took it, as 20 psi under power.
Well, maybe he will clear it up for us. Because 20 psi under power is not good.

Is the switchblade turbo setup popular? It’s not really something I’ve looked into. Is there a major benefit to having.

Ostensibly it is supposed to be the best of both worlds, spool up like a waste gate and more air when it opens up. Really good idea that just didn't work well in my opinion, at least with the one I had. The 177148 was better in my opinion on a B model.

I tried the Switchblade turbo and was really disappointed in it too. Not nearly big enough for my setup. I’m running a VGT housing from an outfit in Utah right now, and this setup is the cat’s ###! Super quick response down low and opens up like it should when you really poor the coals to the engine. My EGT’s dropped considerably at cruising speeds. Can’t say they changed much at WOT, but I wasn’t really expecting that either
