Dand that's good. How many transmissions did you wear out? Place I used to work had a 96 F350 with a 7.3. Thing was a beast. But it had around 300k and the transmission flew apart. Certainly no shame for it considering it was always overloaded.

Probably one of the best engines ever built

Never met the Governments emissions standards. Too bad I believe they should revisit the standards for sake of efficiency. I have rebuilt the transmission twice. I replaced the long block at 586,000, so I am expecting a few more miles with this one.

What caused the original engine to come out at 586k?

Maybe not the right solution, I had major loss of compression in one of the cylinders. I use the truck for my work and figured to attempt to completely eliminate any blunders. I found a Ford Factory Trained Mechanic and he ordered the Long Block thru the Dealership he had worked with. It cams with a 100,000 mile warranty. The charge was $8000 for the Block and his service bill was $2000 he also dropped the fuel tank and sent it to be cleaned. I believe the original engine was stronger it also had the original injectors when it was replaced.

Not a bad run still at nearly 600k.

mine only has about 350k on it and I’ve left the injectors and tuning stock. (I had it tuned for awhile but put the stock PCM back in.) burns about a quart every 3000-3500 miles no matter what brand or weight of oil but it’s done that since I bought it at 140k so it must just have looser tolerances. Right now I’ve got Amsoil signature series 15W40 in it since I know a dealer and get good pricing. At some point I’ll probably take it to the injector guy in Chardon, OH and let him fix me up.

the ZF6 manual was the way to go on these old ones. Fairly stout setup with the right clutch and flywheel. Guys spend 5k on fancy builds on those old 4 speed autos just so they’ll do what the ZF6 can with some clutch work. Bigger 6.0 oil cooler is the best bang for the buck mod to a stock automatic though.

As compared to a larger pan with fins ? Usually about this time of the year with the A/C running and any type of grade pulling the trailer the cooling fan kicks on. I will turn the A/C off and it takes longer for the fan to come on. Thus the question between the 6.0 cooler and a bigger pan comes to mind ?

Oh yeah a Mag-Hytec tranny pan is a good upgrade too. Increases the oil capacity and cools it off better with the finned aluminum.

If you’re having to turn the A/C off to keep the engine from getting too hot your rad might be getting time for replacement. Feel around for cold spots on it when you pull into a rest area. What kind of oil temps are you seeing when pulling up a hill?
