70 hours/8 day rule

    kind of odd that there is even discussion on this, its just math. plus and minus :) me im new, driving solo like 7 weeks, tonight i start my second reset, been short on hours a few times but my first week out after hometime i seem to run like hell. i have run through my 70 and had zero hours coming back, tomorrow i only have 2 hours available.so no point going anywhere, taking a reset in a little station in alabama. has a bar/restaurant/store. not bad

    After the 8th day you subtract the 1st, so if you run 8.75 hours everyday, you can run forever and never take a day off. In my last 2 years of trucking I only took two 34 hour resets, and that's only because my dip-spatchler didn't have any freight. Sometimes I would log 14 hours a day for 5 days, then take 10 hours, yes, only 10 hours off, and I can run some more. (friggin flatbeddin') How can someone make any money if they can't understand this simple concept?

    This is where I disagree. There is never any point in taking 34 hours off where just 10 will do. Unless you have no freight and no place to go, just take your 10 hours and get going. There is plenty of time for a reset when I'm at the shipper or receiver's and can't move for a couple days. But if I don't have to stop because of outside forces, I keep going. But then, I'm old school. I think the 34 hour reset was invented because so many people suck at math. At least you have a good place to stay, that beats the heck out of spending 34 unwanted hours in Sayerville, NJ. :violent1:

    I think I get it.

    They see their logs run up to 70, then they need to get hours back.

    I think a lot of these confused people aren't understanding how a days hours drop off after the 8th day. Dealing with this is the most complicated part of the log, which is why they include a recap. I'd assume that this might be confusing for someone who is not good with math and/or paperwork.

    So, if you hit 70 and don't understand how hours drop off, all you are left with is a 34 hour reset.

    well i have a preplan, but i can pick it up tomorrow morning, so instead of running to get it then parking till after midnight to pick up my hours,ill wait till morning and have a fresh 70

    one reason i want a reset is i seem to get longer runs coming out of one, or from home. i start off pushing hard, get a nice long run, then if i get down to where i only have a few hours or half day left they give me something like 60 miles empty-125 miles loaded, since i wont gain much by heading out now a reset lets me run harder the next week or so.

    You would only need to wait until midnight of the 8th day to pick up the 8.75 hours from the first day. Then you would have 8.75 hours to run on the 9th day.
