I certainly can't see the green truck driver surviving. And there must be no more than about 2 feet between to rear of the flatbed trailer and the nose of the Swift van. 78k pounds rolling at 60+ MPH has a LOT of energy.
2nd accident I've been around today. Witnessed a JB Hunt this morning just decide to roll right into a stopped SUV at a traffic light this morning in PA. Sat there and watched like "WTF" then boom! Felt bad for the poor woman and of course some foreigner gets out of the truck...
Very worried about that flatbed. Looks like one of my company's and we have a guy that would have been there around then. Can't get dispatch on the horn.
The king pin braking and the 5th wheel plate pivot bolts braking in such a scenario are a 40/60 shot at which snaps first, in favor of the pivot pins. But no doubt trailer connections were severed on both units.
On the radio, saying one dead at the scene, UPS and another airlifted to hospital, driver who barreled into them all uninjured. Figures...
I'm surprised the "I don't believe in headache racks" crowd hasn't chimed in. Duh. Of course a headache rack is going to be less than useless in this type of crash scenario.
I passed both of the truck at the 14/15 or so on the way home. I live almost straight north of the accident scene. There were 2 swift trucks and seemed like they were playing leap frog, at that time. Green truck was further west and not in a pack. Thankfully I got off at the 10. I wouldn't want to be near this carnage.
