I doubt his steer axle and tires are rated for anything more than 12,500. Might even be rated as low as 12k. He said he has 1 year experience, so I doubt his company is specing truck with anything higher than 12,500.

What is steer axle rating? It's on a metal plate just inside drivers door?

Steer tire rating? Printed on tire

How much weight on tandems and trailer?

Oh wow, I just realized you said your over on steers and not drives, lol. How far away is the nearest weigh station? Burning 30 gallons should put you under 12,500 steers.

Personally, I dont think the scales would blink and eye at 12.7k steers.

If your steers are 12,700 and the 5th is all the way back as you claim, logic tells me you should also be considerably over on the drives.

Can you provide the rest of the information? Like drives, trailer, and gross?

I have plenty of room to move around the 5th wheel and tandems the issue is they over loaded me on the front. I'll check the steers rating but my concern is DOT I thought there can't be anything over 12000 on the steers

Look in the front of your rand McNally atlas....
There are 2 charts of weight limits. One is for interstates and lists each states limits. The other is for all other roads and lists what each states limits are.
There is a column that says single axle. A steer axle is a single axle. So figure out your axle weight rating (in door jamb it will say what it is rated for) AND your steer tires weight rating (stamped on tire sidewall). Whichever is the lowest number out if tire rating, axle rating, or "single axle" rating is the limit. If you are going on state roads then I believe it has a steer axle limit so factor that number if you are going on those roads.

You can also find useful information in that book regarding trailer wheelbase limits as they do vary by state, with some states having short laws and others have minimum length laws.

I doubt he understand the impact having that 5th wheel all the way back. If it's raining hes going to discover that rig wont steer for nothing. Spin that wheel and she wont turn.

    I say this.

I could care less what is on the steer axle to be honest. As long the magic 80000 pounds, 34000 and 34000 were met.

If I ran into a anal DOT wanting to eyeball the actual tires on that steer set for capacity, hes more than welcome to it. It will be a company ticket not mine.

I strongly suggest you put that 5th wheel back to normal spot. Make sure of your fuel, reweigh to confirm 34K and 34K on other two sets of tandems and no more than 80K gross.
