Most of my days are spent delivering to places out in the middle of nowhere on back roads so it won't be much different for me.

The D.O.T. is a regulatory entity...they are there in order to enforce all the laws that are written by the Fed's and by each particular state...if they enjoy trying to make a living so be it. We are all doing the paying, you're correct, but if they were not not there to enforce those laws , things would be much , much worse....those laws are there for the motoring public's safety...if a driver knowingly moves a piece of equipment that has issues that will cost both him and the company then he takes it on himself to move it.....the driver isn't required to move that equipment 1 inch.....til those issues are taken care of. This topic has been beat to death...drivers complain about bad brakes , leaking air lines , lights that don't work....etc. , yet they continue to move that equipment , instead of exercising the rights given to them by the D.O.T....red flag a piece of equipment and refuse to move it , until its been repaired and the write-up has been signed by a certified mechanic...AN EMPLOYER CAN DO NOTHING ABOUT THIS......its the law.

i am all for safety and i agree, if it wasnt for some enforcement, people would actually drive garbage down the road

however, there are limits and our present system is more about screwing drivers and generating revenue than safety

if you dont see that, then i guess we will just have to agree to disagree

That's because nobody contests it. I belong to a DOT group on LinkedIn and some officers are unaware of this newish interpretation or don't care.

Maybe being aware of the interpretation and being able to cite it at the time would be helpful. I have the Green Book from JJKeller and highlight stuff like this with page markers.

Here's a thought: If it's all about safety, then why aren't all of the scales open 24/7/365? And why aren't the inspectors combing over trucks in every inspection bay 24/7/365? If they have the resources to pull off this 'blitz', then they have the resources to fully utilize the facilities that they have built.

federal Marshalls have nothing to do with Trucking at all. One of the oldest miths out there but, having said that it wouldn't surprise me if there weren't a lot of dot cops that didn't know it .

budget woes...after NJ re-built the scales on the western end of I-78 the head of the NJ office of the DOT said they were gonna be open 24/7/365 aas soon as they were done training. 'cept nobody shoveled the money into the state police budget...
