As I mentioned in this thread I started here, my clients are long haul and stay OTR for weeks at a time.
Not one of the many opinions/advice/criticisms received calling for shorter miles = more net mentioned this critical factor: Driver fatigue.
Since rates are down in the West, one of my clients has been working the Carolinas though AL up to IL, OH valley. All short from the long haul perspective 600-1000 mi runs. I try hard for strap-n-go, batting about 75% on the point. But it's wearing him out. Pic/drop/pic/drop, then there's slow load/unload issues here and there screwing up the drive schedules so driver gots to push harder to make up for lost time. Skipping decent meals and showers to squeeze in sleep to get the job done. He ain't whining about it just pointing out the difference between driving circles & triangles, and straight lines---Long haul: strap, tarp(if required), and do it again 4 days later.
    Opinions?
On another point. One of my drivers wants to visit family in CO and told me to send him there. Picked up 25k lbs military at Ft Irwin CA, strap-n-go, $2200, 974 ld mi, $2.26/mi to Colorado Springs CO. Wouldn't send him there on my own...Weight & rate leaving suck. Sure would be grateful if someone would "private message" me with a contact to help me salvage this run. Looking to leave Wednesday 8/22.

Your drivers have no patience. If they're content with cheap long hauls of 1,500 to 2,000 miles more power to them. They have a mileage mentality and no patience. Personally I have a much easier go of it staying under 400 miles a day - keeping way more money than long haulers - and trying to work things out where I'm home almost every night or at least every other night. Got to use them noggins for something besides a hat rack otherwise you'll end up like MB_Guru thinking there's grand conspiracies everywhere.

Loads ot CO should be paying the avg of $3 mile. i just looked on LS board and there are several from the Los Angeles area paying that, and I can find them anytime.... it;s getting back out of CO that is going ot be the killer. Hence why the rates going there pay so well.

I haven't seen that at all going back to the midwest. Everything is in the $1.75-$1.90 range, granted it is all just light stuff under 20,000# too. I'm waiting till Monday to see what i can come up with. I have that LTL booked to p/u Wednesday, but If i can find something before then paying better, I'm on it.

the major flaw in that plan is #3 sure the fixed costs per mile goes down the more you run, but your variable goes up also with more miles ran.

when that happens the actual bottom line may not change at all or little.

and in #4 you had better make more than a contribution toward your fixed costs, you better cover them or you only have a slowly failing business.

Not at all, the load I have is a LTL and I plan on picking it up Wednesday. I can pick it up anytime Mon-Tues-Wed, I just figured it might take me some time to line up another LTL to go with it. If i can find something paying a little better to go with it, then I'm on it and out of here before Wednesday. But the way the LTL stuff is going out here it just dosn't seem like it's gonna happen.
