I drove a U and a R model back in '83 with the 300 and a straight 5...Coming out of a screaming jimmy, it took a little getting used to shifting it...The joke was when you wanted to shift you'd take it out, reach up and drink some coffee and about that time it would be ready to slide into 5th....With that hi-torque low-RPM engine, I couldn't get over how hard that truck would pull, forget 2100, it came out at 16....They were a tough truck back then and all Mack....I never had a Mack break down on me and leave me stuck somewhere....Yeah, they rode a little hard, heck they all did back then....One drawback on the Superliner was they were a heavy tractor, something like 21,500, that'd limit your payload, especially with a reefer, but man would they pull...Oh yeah, if you lost your alternator/batteries, you could put the fuel pump on mechanical override and keep on truckin....
papamoonshine and 51.50 Thank this. -
