If you plan on getting "10+" back every day....what are you planning on doing on Day 8....Oh yeah, a 34 reset......but then you wouldn't need to be getting anything back since you're doing a reset....but you are thinking you will have recap hours.....

You need to quietly sit down and figure out HOS and how to use them to their maximum potential. You are mixing metaphors so to speak.....and by thinking the way you are, you get yourself confused. Remember, KISS; [keep it simple stupid]!

What I am still unclear on is if that 2 hour sleeper/off duty period must be taken within the modified 14 hour workday.

Example of what I did yesterday...

1900: on duty 15 minute pretrip
1915: drive 1:30 to shipper and send my Mac 1.

I currently have 9.5 remaining on my 11 hour clock, and I have 12.25 remaining on my 14 hour clock.

I log sleeper from 2045-0445. While I logged that 8, my co driver sent the loaded call, fueled and drove however far he drove.

0445: I climb out of the sleeper(or should I say went on duty... I was technically not in the sleeper for that last hour there?) and drive my remaining 9.5 hours down to .25, with a 30 minute break in there about 6 hours in, and pull into the first truck stop I could find. I log off duty and send my dvir Mac 32.

I have .25 left on my line 3.
I have 2.25 left on my line 4.

He goes ahead and completes his 10. We shower, have a smoke and eat my dinner and his breakfast, then we bounce on down the road while I log a full 10 hour break.

Am I in compliance? And when could I actually have driven after I completed that 2 hours off duty at the end of the day? Could I have taken that 2, then driven as if I had a new, full clock or did I need to take the 10 consecutive?

I'm running team with my mentor. And I don't mind a reset, so long as it isn't with 20 hours remaining on my clock and time coming back to me, like he has been making me. I get paid by the hour until I upgrade. I can't justify taking a 34 and not getting paid for that time away from my family, while he is home with his and I still have plenty of hours( and so does he, we weren't running team yet.)

Modified 14 hour work day? What is a modified 14? The 2 hour side of the 8/2 is for extending the 14 hour clock...nothing else!
Let me finish this for you..."and went to Sleeper."

Makes no sense for you to go off the clock after only using 1.75 hours of your 14. Mentor should have stayed in the Sleeper and you finish your day!
There is a provision in the HOS for the other team member to be able to come up front without changing duty status...don't worry about that part.
Line 4 doesn't have any limitations! You can be on Line 4 till the cows come home...however once the last cow got home, you must take 10 consecutive hours off before you can DRIVE again...as long as you didn't burn up your 70 being on Line 4.
Completely in compliance. If you would have tried to drive after the 2 hours you would only have 1.75 hours of drive time available....what you drove before the 8 hour break plus what you didn't drive after the 8.

The best way to think this through is keep in mind you are the STUDENT, and you need to get your time completed (as efficiently as possible). Your Mentor has already put his training time in, so he calls the shots, just get it done and get yourself solo so you can be in charge of your own destiny so to speak. Unless you could find a different Mentor that would work better with your personal and training schedule...you're kind of stuck.

It was a 1070 mile round trip with 5 live unloads and Dallas evening rush hour, New Orleans, Baton Rouge and a few others morning rush hour. I wanted to preserve every minute of our collective drive time that I could so we could get back with the time we had, and still have time for a 10 before we had to pick up the next load(which they moved from 0400 to 2106 tonight, completely negating all the gymnastics).

If we didn't make it back, we would be taking a 10, or part of a 10, at some random truck stop and then someone would have to start their clock to drive a couple of hours to drop the MT, missing our 0400(as we thought then) appointment to pick up our next load.

I didn't want to spend 2 or more hours of my clock sitting there when I could utilize them to drive(I get paid 1.50 more per hour on line 3). Also I figured it would be better to learn how to work my clock now, rather than when I upgrade and I'm solo.

Because they keep turning to the truck stop wheel of fortune to answer FMCSA reg. questions. Also, stop adding 405 details about your day and what you were trying to do and the 3 different time zones you've operated in since Tue and never, ever mention your first company or trainer when answering regs.
