$1800 to $2000 is what we pay, I just had one installed a few months ago and my brother has had a few done. This guy does all our Transmission and rear end work. And we are in lower Al. He just replaced a gear in my tranny, replaced a synchronizer and put in a bearing kit. Cost me $2950 and 4 days. Didn't replace the clutch because it was done earlier in the year.
Truck should be good for a while hopefully. Motor, tranny and both rears have been done in the past 2 years.

That's why I specified in my post, that's Chicago pricing....cost of living is a bit higher than in Alabama...

You may want to think about replacing your harmonic balancer. A bad one will cause the type of problems you are facing.

I'm confused. What does this have to do with the crankshaft or the engine?

If it is worn out it will cause vibrations that will cause ( after a period of time) problems like you are going through. There is no way to test the balancer, but if it has 500,000 miles or more on it I would seriously consider replacing it. Hopefully someone with more knowledge than me will chime in.

You are correct. I had my mechanic check it today. It was recently replaced (less than a year ago). I believe the issue is that the clutch had bad springs caused major damage to the input shaft and flywheel housing.

Well , around here there are lots of off road ( farm, logging, etc. ) trucks, so clutches are routine replacement items.. The mechanic that did mine for 350 bucks has a great reputation, and clutches are about 75 % of his business. There are several GOOD , reasonable mechanics in our neck of the woods who know the value of a good job done right the first time, at a fair price, on the truckers time-table ( week-ends, over-night, between loads, etc ).

I wish I could find someone as you described. I can't seem to find a good mechanic at a decent price.

Yea About $3K is the going rate. Maybe even $3500. Your certain they are doing a clutch, and not rebuilding the tranny?

Are you asking me? Because if so, I mentioned earlier that they're putting in a rebuilt transmission.
