I was in a similar situation one time as the mechanic shop owner. Guy expects me to lock my doors roll to the truck with my little binder mechanics truck and straighten his mess out for what a .clutch job would be. When I arrive I find his transmission suspended in air by the input shaft no jack still needing about an inch to be flush with a chain hooked to it and other end of chain tied to A 100 HP front wheel assist tractor. He couldn't push it in so he thought he could pull it in. Bill wasn't cheap

I had my 18 speed replaced Jan this year. Freightliner in Atlanta wanted just a little over 8k for the rebuilt transmission. Plus a week to get it. I politely told them pack sand. I was bobtailing to Davenport Ia to my buddies shop. If it completely went, I got people with lowboy trl
The people I work for called their Pete dealer just on the north side of Louisville. They got me a rebuild for 5k, had it there the next day..
Bell housing needed new bushing, no biggie. They used my bell housing, this is how I know on that.
Like stated, unless yours is cracked or plain trashed out they last longer than the transmission. But like has been said transmission cases cracked or broke, then you will pay a core charge which can get spendy

Gotta love how trucking is so expensive. Yet rates are so low it's not even worth starting up your truck. If it wasn't for the direct contacts I have, I'd end my business now.

I was coming down Donner Pass on I-80 one pleasent sunday afternoon, west bound for mon. delivery in the bay,I stopped in the last rest area before Sacremento to kill some time, this was back in the 70's.Parked there was an older latino fellow, with a set of flatbed doubles, full load of hay.His single axle tractor was an antique retired CF cabover, had obviously seen much, much better days. His wife was parked next to him with a beatup pickup truck with tools and parts. The fellow was trying to change his transmission, which was a heavy old compound mechanical Brownie with a reversing bar.16 forward,16 reverse, iirc, lol. He had a pipe laying on the roof of the tractor, with the other end stuck in the front of the hay bales hanging off the front pup.He had a halfazz cable comealong with the trans hanging from it trying to get it cranked up high enough to get the trans in.I didn't want to see the guy get hurt, because it looked like a disaster waiting to happen.Put my coveralls on,and I helped him get the trans in,being very careful to never get under it,as the comealong would go up 2 notches, then slip down 3.Several hours we finally got it in and buttoned up without any injuries,he was very grateful.Don't see much of this in this day and age.Probably good too, unless you have better tools, lol.
