75 means half of those idiots will think that means 90. But most 4-wheelers don't maintain their vehicles in a way that makes 65 safe.
its not only perrishables that gotta move trash and much are the same way loads are paying $5-7 a mile on average....youd be very surprised how many loads get "lost" in the middle of the night lol
what I bolded/underlined. right there speaks volumes. i thought about this before I was going to respond. "but all other considerations were as they are now".. meaning, traffic, road construction, 4 wheelers. i would have to say no. reasons being, even at 65 mph we are on a "higher alert" to the stupidity of others and our general surroundings, and i do believe also that inclement weather also heightens our alertness. this makes us tired and maybe slower in responding to emergencies. we are drawn out at the end of our shift. is it really worth us getting that tired, that we make a severe mistake, all for the sake of going faster??? i think not. at my age now, i can see where the cruise control does me fine at or about 67 mph, and i still get to my destination on time, and with less stress on myself. as a company driver, i really have NO CONCERN for fuel consumption, or cost. but i do take into consideration how i would be looked upon by my company if i were to be stopping for fuel more frequently, as opposed to a driver that is "conservative about fuel economy". I'd rather the company appreciate my safer driving habits, than costing them MORE money at the pumps. but this is just me, an OLDER driver, that has been there, done that, and found that you really save no more time than you'd ever think. remember, the tortoise and the hare?? who always won..???
Funny thing about that tortoise story... I never get beaten to a destination by a Swift truck. Just sayin... And, with my gearing, my truck doesn't get much less fuel mileage at 80 than it would at 65, and is actually slightly BETTER than it is at 70.
I like fast trks too.I wanna get there,I don't have time to diddle daddle around.I got spoiled by fast trks. The trk I drive now took getting use to,no way no how would I go OTR in a real slow trk.But help me understand why you can't see much of a difference in fuel mileage going much faster then a slow trk?
Depends on the situation I guess. There is no room for error doing 80 in a big truck! Ever have a steer blow? I have and could not imagine it happening at 80mph! That would be the end of your driving career. So is it worth it? In reality you really aren't going to get there much faster at all. So if you were smart and weighed out options it really isn't worth it. As a company driver most trucks won't allow you to go 80mph. If you are an owner op that's just plain dumb because you are burning a hell of a lot more fuel! Making the trip worthless. As an owner op if you average 60-63 or so you will make gobs more money than running more miles. Though 65 seems slow in a big truck it is a good, safe top speed to run. When we hauled horses my boss kind of expected us to run the posted speed whether it be 70 or greater. Actually felt uncomfortable running those speeds all the time and it makes for running into more traffic and slower trucks more often. Also gives you less patients for those running slower. Running 60-63 keeps you away from everyone else and is actually less stressful! Given the choice of running 80mph I would not do so, personally, its just not worth it.
