Speed is never free and I believe the OP said if fuel was a dime. However, with my typical operation, I try to maximize revenue per work performed, so over 70mph rarely happens for me, even if it's legal.
Running my little truck I loose 15% @ 70MPH so I stay around 59-65mph unless time is that critical. I figure time verus money spent and most of time running a little slower pays more.
Same here. I end up with more in my settlements by keeping the fuel bill under control at slower speeds than I do by running fast. The fuel bill climbs faster than any additional revenue from maybe one more load a week. Now that's not true for everyone - someone pulling short haul trips paid by the load benefit from higher speeds.
yep, big money, i can do the speed limit and then some. but as i said i rarely do. i usually set the cruise at 62 or 63 and just ease along. i have however for 10 minutes or so set the cruise at 80 in west texas, kind of flashback to the late seveties and early eighties when fuel was dirt cheap.
there is the problem of any turn and rise in the road hiding something you would not be able to stop for like that road grader story
Of course... we hear it all the time on these pages. Fools who have no business running that fast are always biotching that EVERYBODY must run at the speed limit - because they don't have the driving skill to run at that speed safely.
