then yes you should have a power divider. also if you want to know if your power divider is locking up then jack up just one drive wheel any position. with it unlocked and the vehicle in nuetral, brakes released (chock front wheels) you should be able to turn the wheel by hand and it will spin freely. if you look the drive shaft will also be turning. Ok then simply flip the valve and lock the divider. the wheel should now not be able to be turned by hand. You can try this by putting it in gear also.
if the wheel spins it is not locked. if it is locked your gona pull off the jack so be carefull.
Also i have a 79 frieghtliner coe. im not sure how different they were from a 79 to 81 but mine has a fifth wheel slide valve up on the right hand side of the top of the dash. up by where the radio mount is. the power divider valve should be right next to it.

HI again.
Nice pic of your truck. I'll try to get a picture of my dash to see if it is like yours.
I cannot find a divider switch on my dash but I think I see where it may have been.
Also, I hauled a couple loads of corn with it today and everything seems to work as it should. It seems to have enough power for what I'm doing, so I don't think I'll need to modify the injection pump.
Will be checking back in a day or two! -
Farmer Bob, congrats on your purchase. before you start messing with the fuel pump try a few loads first. the 290 formula cummins is a good pullin engine and also very reliable and economical for its time. There are lots of bolt on goodies for these engines! good luck!

Cool i cant wait to see the pics. if your valve is gone there should be an air hose that is blocked off. if you need a valve let me know i may have a spare one id send ya. anyhow as far as messing with the pump if its running good enough for you and has plenty of power then i would leave it. if anything with fuel almost at 3 buks a gallon again i think i would reduce the button size to a point where power is no longer acceptable and then go back up justa bit till it is acceptable again. this would maximize fuel economy.

Hi all, thank you all for some GREAT feedback!
I have used the truck the last two days and it has worked better than I expected.
Power is ample for the approx. 850 bu. hopper trailer, I'm not going to change a thing on the injector. It gets up to speed better than the straight trucks I've been using!!!
Just curious on what kind of goodies are available though, let me know what's out there.
Need some tips on a couple more things....the tach and speedo are both not working.
It has some kind of time clock (big black box things) that is used for both the tach and speedo with cable drives on each one. Are the drive cables broken perhaps ??
Also another note - it seems as tho it is governed to only go about 55 mph. Just guessing as the speedometer is not working. (That's not an issue as its plenty fast enough for me, just would like to hear what you guys think about that).
Have yet to find the divider switch, although there is a couple vaccum lines coming into a tee that are plugged off lying on the engine cover coming out from under the dash area. Yea, I think i'll need a switch! (MRBULLFROG92)
I still have to chase down the lines and see what else may be missing.
I'll post a pic of the dash and truck if I find a way to do it here.
Everything else seems to work great as far as lights, guages, transmission, brakes ect ect. Oh yea, the thing has no power steering... after a few trips to the elevator my arms were sore! I feel for the over the road guys that dealt with no power steering on a day to day basis.
Again, Thank each and everyone of you for the pointers !
P.S. When the truck idles it vibrates and rattles a BUNCH... but if I gas it up just a tad it hits a sweet spot where it is not idling to fast and also stops the vibration .
Can I turn the idle up on the injector and if so how?
Thanks -
I had my hand on that valve just the other day. i will get it out so i can send it to ya. also i will get ya some pics of where it should go in the truck.

Hi Bullfrog, My great truck story has a sad chapter ... everything worked great with the truck for the week that I have got to use it, then a couple days ago I was going to pull the loaded trailer (900 bushels of corn around 27,000#) out of a soft field ... put the truck in low gear and bang! something in the differential let loose. It makes a loud bang approximately each time the driveshaft makes a full revolution at the differential. Oh, and it does not move. I have since noticed that every part on the front differential has been blue glued!!! I've manually engaged the 2nd differential through the power divider and pulled the axles out of the first differential and capped the open ends with steel plates. It doesn't make any noises with the axles pulled so I hauled the corn (10 miles round trip) to the elevator and have since parked the truck. I'll be looking for a Rockwell differential in the future. I do have a 1979 IH Cabover transtar that has a different make housings I was kinda hoping may bolt into the Freightliners place? Any thoughts?

That looks like an old Coke truck. By front differential, are you talking about the one closest to the transmission?
