It could be as high as 8 mpg unloaded or as low as 3 mpg loaded. Depending on how you drive it and what the rear end ratio is.truckingman Thanks this. -

Back in 1989 what I read from Detroit Diesel was that Roger Penske wanted a reliable cheap and fuel efficient engine for the regular trucker and none of Cat, Cummins or Mack was interested in his money,But Detroit took the challenge, Penske gave them 800 millions, and they bought an old block out of production from Cat, incorporating computerized fuel injection and moving the cam to the head to reduce moving parts and few other changes, the Series 60 was born, this was in the mid 80's.
Your post here is the first time that I heard other wise.true blue Thanks this. -
what would be some good upgrades to do to the 8v92?

I was working for a Detroit dealership, in the late 80's when Penske owned Detroit, there was going to be a Detroit, John Deere engine collaboration. John Deere was going to build the short block an 8V then the trucking OEM's said no more 8V's. Detroit did not need a Cat block to make anything.
If you look at a 60 series block it is about as simple as it gets. I holds the liners and has mounting surfaces for a few things, and the oil cooler period. The front gear case, rear housing, oil pump to the bottom.
Back to the truck the bolt holes in the side of the frame should be filled, the holes in the top flanges are the allen wrench holes for the beveled bolts holding the cross members in. If you put anything to cap the frame you would have to reposition the hinge on the back to compensate for the extra width.
To me it is an old truck, and has lived a long life how it is, I would leave it as it is. Fill the open holes, grease it and go.
The use of 15-40 is not a killer I worked for a trucking company and they used it in all there Detroit's. Delo 40. Personally I would use the 40W or 30W Delo 100. Keep the RPM below 1800 and go make some money. Just a thought!Last edited: Oct 28, 2010
