I went and Googled John Deere and Detroit diesel. something I did not know was that Detroit got John Deere to cast some of the cylinder heads for the 50 series. Just a thought!

I could not find any confirmation on it but the 8.2 is a posible John Deere Detroit collaboration, that would make sense.

In the early 80's I had a silver 8V92 in a 1979 cab over Pete and it got 3mpg pulling a reefer nationwide. It had an allison automatic and I think 3:90 rears with a looooong wheelbase. There was about 9 or 10 feet between the cab and trailer. If I remember right, my foot stayed pretty much glued to the floor. Was driving through L.A. rush hour traffic today shifting a thousand times and thought about how cool it was to have the automatic in Shakeytown traffic way back then. I remember that in 1983 I stayed out on the road for 1 solid, whole, complete year in that truck - never went home once.
Cabover Mike and Independent Thank this. -
It's pretty common knowledge in the 2 stroke enthusiast circles that the 60 series was designed by Deere because the 2 stroker failed to pass emissions despite everything they tried including electronic controls (DDC), that is where I learned about it.
A similar thing is how Cummins bought the original already designed 5.9L 6B engine from Case tractor company, which later on made Cummins famous when it was shoehorned into Dodge pickup trucks in 1989. -
I run a DD 6V92TA in a 28,000 lb bus/motorhome conversion. Allison 740 trans, 3.70 rear, w/ 11R 24.5 tires and I see a little over 6 mpg # 63 mph (2100 rpm).
If I run 70-72, in the mountains, I yield 5.2 - 5.5. Your mileage will vary.
I have always been told NOT to lug the engine with low rpm's, below 1800, especially up hills.
Hope this helps, good luck with your decision.
What is your location, I have many friends with the same engine & qualified 2 stroker repair contacts. -
I had an 8V92TA in a '79 Aerodyne, 13 over, I don't remember the axle ratio. I ran west coast from MI and averaged mid 4 mpg loaded, over 5 with an empty reefer. I would guess that 8v92s that averaged <4 mpg loaded were being being operated at high RPM; I didn't drive mine that way.

Did some googling, it seems to be paraffinic base oil like Kendall and LE, that's why it can take the beating of 2 stroke Detroit.

I would check into the KW with the cat BUT make sure the cat is a B model for resale value , check the engine serial number if it is 92U it is an "A" block and not nearly as good of an engine although still a lot better than a 30year old detroit
That W/S has reyco suspension which gives terrible traction on any kind of rough ground.
the cat will start in the cold , can be idled has the potential for a lot better fuel milage.truckingman Thanks this. -
I ended up not getting the Western star I am going to wait to see what other trucks come up
