ok just got in from the truck again well i took a minute to check out the fuel system thats visible to eye to see if there were any visible leaks i found one but tigtgened it up and it appears to be all buttoned up in terms of fuel leaks. now shes still running from a 5gal tank and she is pulling fuel not the most but she has pulled, plus the return has been throwing out as well visually. i was having a problem even getting it to crank and stay running it will stay on for like 1-2 mins idle will be very steady then you try to rev and it was still lazy to rev with hardly no response to anything in throttle moving.
the last time i got it to run before coming in she stayed running long enough to suck up 3 quarts of trans fluid then cut off at idle.
Does this engine have a secondary pump of somesort? electrical transfer pump?
I had decided to pull off filters to see if they had fuel and both were only filled to about 1/4 way through both the feed and return side. I filled them back up and still the same crappy start, then runs, crappy non repsonsive reving and then cuts off.

am i stuck with nothing else but to pull of pump and have it checked rebuilt'?

Are you sure youre not sucking air somewhere? If not it sounds like a transfer pump issue. The fact that the filters doesnt stay filled indicates to an air issue.
-
if it is sucking in air i cant find a wet spot anywere from it leaking? truck was running prior to this but had been sitting a while. Really only used as a yard dog. But was running locally before being used in yard.
i noticed on the driver side rear top part of bellhousing theres a alumium block looking transfer block of somewort which looks to have fuel lines going in and out of it. Im about to disconnect the line right off the back of the pump and feed it right off the 5gallon tank up front insteaD of thru all of the fuel lines and primary filter base to see if it runs any better wow what a mission.
I was hoping omeone could just tell me it would be an easy fix in terms of searching for problem. If its leaving filters somewhat empty wouldnt it mean pump isnt working in order ot fill them back up again???? -
The fact that the fuel filters are half full points to an air, suction problem. Is there anyway that you can check fuel pressure? If the fuel pump is bad it means the motor is using more fuel than what the fuel pump can supply, resulting in the half full filters.
-
i dont know where to get a fuel pressure reading off this type of system is there a port on the fuel pump to do so? and what should the pressure be? i
to me it seemed to have wasted more fuel then what it should have wasted from just sitting idliing.
i just hate pulling off this pump as i need that special curcved wrench to get to the bolt on the back side of pump close to the block uuuggghhh... -
Have you removed and cleaned the screen filter on the pump itself ???
-
what screen filter? i have only changed the round external filters. were is this screen type filter located????

When your fuel supply line is drawing from the bottom of the fuel tank or a bucket setting on the ground then fuel from the filters will siphon back to the tank/bucket when the engine is shut down. Your fuel supply line should not be down that low, it should be at top of tank level like when it's connected to the standpipe in the fuel tank. I wouldn't go pulling the pump until you correct all the other issues it has with the fuel system. The fuel supply lines and any O-rings at filter head fittings and pump inlet fitting can suck air and not show a fuel leak, but a clear tube or glass eye would show you the air in the line. Air in the fuel system would make the engine run like you describe and replacing or repair of the fuel pump won't fix that.

There are screens on the injectors on this engine, most likely plugged with the black gunk.
