A 9 car parked next to me last week, looked over at his trailer & he only had two wheel straps per car. So in his case, it would have just cleaned off the entire top deck. Not sure how far he was going with them, could have been staying local.

I don't care if I'm moving 5 ft or 1000 miles, they all get strapped the same. (4 straps)

Although I did like the trailer that passed me with a damaged M/B strapped down with the little orange straps that are rated at like 500lbs each........:biggrin_2559:

I would have to eat a lot of crow if I did less than 4 as well....& the more I think about the 2 strap 9 car guy, he was from CA staying in a AZ truck stop. Odds are it wasn't a local deal.

I've worked with plenty of the short-chain/short-strap guys; I swear it's like their manhood depends on their being able to claim the shortest load time! I could load faster, but I'm old and wise enough to know my body is going to last a lot longer without the running, jumping, and bouncing on the tiedown bar these guys all seem to do; and I pretty much four chain everything.

One of these guys ran off the road and jumped two approaches a year or two back. It was a hassle to use the rear chains on #1 position on that truck, so he just keep the trap doors open and put two chains on that end. The Yaris he had up there flipped off and was hanging by those two chains while it banged against the front of the truck, until he hit the second approach, which snapped the chains. Luckily for him, the car was damaged so badly that you couldn't tell that the front tiedown slots would have been intact, otherwise the insurance company would have told him to take a hike on that unit.

Of next time I saw him, in a different truck, that front unit was still only chained on one end. Some people never learn!:biggrin_25513:

After seeing a car on my hood, I would be asking if 8 chains would be too many? ####.

I always watch my mirrors just to see if something is bouncing wrong, if using wheels straps or if a chain isn't pulled evenly like on a heavy truck. Matter of fact, moved a overloaded AT&T 3/4 ton truck w/utility box this past week & had four chains & four wheels straps. Could not bottom the rear out with all the weight the idiot had in it, it was a very long 1300 miles watching it. Will not load another one now that I know what they are.

GPS units in a greenhorn carhaulers hand is an accident in the making....When I started hauling cars....we had six car rigs....and if you didn't " winch 'm down ".....you could not get legal....When we started getting the 75 ft....102 rigs in 1989...that all changed....as did the industry as a whole.....Deregulation brought lots of fly by niter rate cutters into the industry....With the low rates ...they can't hire top of the line car haulers...Accidents like this are the result.....

With car hauling it seems like you've got to be a little smarter then the average bear.

It kinda looks like a good way to go for an o/o. I would guess it's hard to get insured if your an idiot in that part of the industry.
