When cresting a hill and beginning a decent descent lightly drag your brakes 50yards or so to work a little heat into them and melt the ice.
When finishing up for the day, however, slow gradually down the off-ramp and into truck stop/rest area. Use brakes as little as possible and leave the trailer air supply (red) pushed in so the trailer brake shoes wont freeze themselves to the drums.
A few cold weather tips

What about your foggy day ? How do you know that MR Scared ######## wasn't on your stretch of the road looking through the fog and as a result was also unpredictable. How do you know what he was about to do ? Sudden lane change or thinks he sees something coming up out a ditch or wherever and so he brings it to a screeching halt. If they're scared they're not likely using the rearview mirror ,they're just Straight Ahead Fred in most cases.
We all get your argument that we are responsible not to hit anyone . No one is questioning that . Perhaps the 55 mph was to fast in other poster`s case . I don`t know I was there. Just like your foggy day I wasn`t there either. The one common denominator tho was MR 15 mph Scared ######## and he is a big a problem .Last edited: Dec 6, 2013
FLATBED, magoo68 and Licensed to kill Thank this. -
Anyone scared of conditions going 15 or 55 will be dangerous. If they are gonna do something stupid, id much rather them be going 15.
I'm not saying everyone is running junk equipment. I'm saying, that the guys going 15 might be and if their tires arn't as good, their equipment cant be driven safely at the same speeds a fast driver does.
In any case, everyone has a right to use the roads, and assuming mr scared doesn't loose control and swerve in my lane, he has every right to be out there, regardless of his speed.Bigchevy Thanks this. -

I go by if I can't do roughly half the speed limit safely, I am no longer using my time effectively and it is time to call it a day. May vary depending if threatening weather is approaching ... Not sure why threads like this go around and around ...

couple of years ago it was real slick on this little stretch of road that I know pretty well....it's always slick there. There were plenty of warning signs...shiny roads, partially snow covered, no spray, 4 wheelers in the ditch everywhere. I'm doing about 50 in the granny lane when some guy from QC that was apparently quite "comfortable" with the situation passes me ~70 mph. I slow down to give him distance.....good thing too because he jack knifed right in front of me and I almost couldn't get stopped. Idiot.
Comfort has nothing to do with it because ignorance is bliss.Richter Thanks this. -

Once I am below 30 mph to remain safe. I'm parking at the next t/s. just my .02$
flightwatch and muff Thank this. -
Actually no they cant most interstates have a minimum driving speed below that you are impeding traffic and become a safety issue. If you were involved in an accident driving below the minimum speed you would be at fault if the driver of the truck or car were killed as a result it would be on your hands GET OFF THE ROAD AT THAT LOW OF A SPEED YOU ARE AN ACCIDENT LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO HAPPEN>muff and HappyHardCore Thank this.
