A few cold weather tips

    That has to be some of the worst advice I've ever heard, give it few years on the road and you will see things different.

    Another problem in the wintertime is ice in the air lines- Remember to drain your tanks to help get rid of moisture. Make a habit of pulling the air tank cord a few times or opening the drain valve for a few seconds whenever you fuel up. No need to completely drain the tank.

    Carry some sort of air line anti-freeze for emergency use. Isopropyl alcohol or a small bottle of "heet" will also work in a bind. It can be added by removing the gladhands and pouring just a bit in the lines. Only use in an emergency as alcohol used in equipment with ABS systems may void the warranty.


    One more- think about getting a small NOAA weather radio to keep in your truck if the am/fm does not have the option already on it. Knowing about a pending winter storm can help you prepare in advance.

    If you're hearing about a winter weather warning on a NOAA radio, and this is the first you've heard of it, you're too late in your discovery and poorly informed.

    This is saved me several times this winter alone, allowing me to deviate around or stay ahead of systems (we don't run regionally or locally, but rather 1,500+ mile runs, plains to Jersey and eastern seaboard typically)

    ALWAYS CHECK TO MAKE SURE YOUR BRAKES ARE RELEASED, ALL OF THEM.

    I-80 from I-25 to Hillsdale looked like the remains of a tire store this morning, MVT, Hill Bros., Werner, SWIFT, and a O/O all left pieces, parts and whole tires from trailer tire blowouts because of frozen brakes and tires being dragged. Hill Bros. lost two, MVT lost a super single.

    Now by no means am I taking an anti-fast driving stance. I like to get places in a hurry, bad weather don't bother me, been driving, and before that riding in it my whole life.

    That being said there's times I've been on I-80 in Wyoming with our new variable speed limit signs where if I was doing 40 mph I would have gotten pulled over and gotten a ticket I'm sure.

    A Cold Weather Tip, Drain your air tanks daily, especially if you have air/water issues! Nothing like goin down the road and havin your truck freeze up on ya!

    I know one of our drivers with frozen DEF tank. No additives im aware of can be added to it.

    Was coming back through Laramie, heading back to Cheyenne last winter. I saw what was left of the Super Single in the left lane, but the compact car trying to pass me didn't until it was too late and hit it. Well, for the next 45 miles or so, I was on the lookout for more tires...there was a nice double grove in the road surface from whoever it was dragging a rim. I got off at I-25 South to head back to the store at Exit 7. The grove looked to continue on down I-80 Eastbound LOL.
