You should see the chain replacement day in the steel mill. Those links are WORN OUT and when they rig the new chain on there, it's beautiful to behold.

They don't have to withstand .8g of force only the aggregate ultimate breaking strength of all you're securement.SAR Thanks this.

With a 45k lb coil the problem wont be using enough chains. Given the right conditions, I have seen pics and driven by a scene where the trailer itself simply failed and broke in half. The chains ripped the trailer apart.

My company requires 1 chain per 4,000 lbs of weight. This results in a lot of stares and eye rolling when we put 10 chains+binders on a 40k coil.
But I still do it. I don’t want to end up in the news for killing a family.1951 ford, MACK E-6, Truckermania and 1 other person Thank this. -
That's not quite right.
In other words, at .8 g deceleration in the forward direction, can not exceed the minimum breaking strength of your tie downs. If you have tie downs pulling forward (such as with coils or equipment, etc.) then those chains/straps/whatever don't figure into the equation. -
I understand exactly what the requirement is, your original statement said;
but that's not true, it's up to you to provide enough securement to meet that standard not the manufacturer. -
What is the chain attached to? You have no idea of trailer component strengths! Please take the time to learn here before putting your foot in your mouth. Inertia forces are incredible!

OP,
As. @johndeere4020 @OLDSKOOLERnWV and many others who have hauled Coils.
you never trust the coil or the chains or your trailer. No matter what distance you travel, or thoughts you may have.
If you dont respect the load it will teach you a life changing lesson.
quoting book specs, quoting fmcsa guidlines. will never replace being in a situation with a Coil load.
chaining more is better than less. -
I'm with @Hurst on this. I'm more worried about the trailer tie downs than the chains or binders in a event. If you put more than 5 chains on a coil the tie down points are so close together it just creates a zipper on the side of the trailer. I can run j hooks in front and behind the coils and run straps over the top too, away from the side rails.
Believe me if you hit something that makes your truck stop in less than 25' at 60 mph the coil is coming lose but it probly won't matter to the driver anyways.RollinThunderVet, brsims, misterG and 4 others Thank this. -
A flatbedders worst nightmare? Well my first thought was, waking up one day to find you have been relegated to the door swinging crowd.
Imagine my surprise to find y’all talking securement.
I believe having a coil run me over would be preferable to having to drag a van.Highway Sailor, nikmirbre, Zeviander and 6 others Thank this.
