Uh ... no. Yes there are some who can't make it and resort to mentoring. But Swift does not "starve" anyone into negative paychecks. I finished one lease and am currently purchasing a truck ... running solo the entire time.
I started with $2500 in cash reserve. At the end of my first year the cash value of my business was $7,900, at the end of the second year it was $10,900 and at the end of last year it was $16,300.
A mentor at last

Not really rude, depends on where you are ... Eastern PA can be rude, central PA people seem to be the result of some kind genetic inbreeding program gone wrong, western PA are unionized entitled lazy.
New Jersey folks, business like and they consider skimming a little off the top to be just business, but they do make sure to offer you your cut ... because, well, that's just good business.
Upstate NY around the Hudson Valley and the Finger Lakes are really nice people and very sociable. Western NY, people are simply depressed, you can see it in thier eyes, they want you to put a bullet in thier head, but won't ask because they're afraid you'll say no.scottied67 Thanks this. -

Day1: got 4 hours driving time in my mentor 2013 KW T700. Flat screen Xbox 12" sub. Spending the night at the ATL terminal. Over & Out!

lol, Sounds like you're rollin in a Comfort Inn with 18 wheels bumpy! Congrats on finally making it out with your mentor! Keep us posted.swiftbumpymon Thanks this.

Day2: first of all if you are a mentor and owner/operator you should think twice about becoming a mentor with a fresh brand new commercial driver at the wheel of your $100,000 investment. Second of all recent grads get paid by the hour not the miles;might need to adjust those numbers Jerry before a student ends up hurting a mentor or vice versa. Got 8 hours driving in today made a couple mistakes so now my mentor is taking over the wheel. Maybe day 3 will go better for me so these 38,000lbs of fruit snacks get to the west coast in time. Over & out

BTW my mistakes were I missed a gear and the truck cut off on me by releasing the clutch too early: just learned how to shift gears at commercial driving school.

All in gaining experience. You'll get it.swiftbumpymon Thanks this.

Have fun out here. As far as new grads and the pay, the mentor can dictate what and how many hours in a day a student will drive, like for me, L/O, he/she will not be driving 10 hours a day for 5 days just to get that 50 hours in, since at the end of that time, we both will be just about out of hours, so then need to take a 34. I am surprised that your mentor took over. Did not think that he could, especially since he would not have that many hours to drive after you did your 8.
