I drove 2 auto shifts and hated each one. But that was a few years ago, when I would imagine they were in their "infancy". Nowadays, I guess they would be MUCH better.
I have no need for one, at least my company thinks I don't, and that's fine with me.
I have NO PLANS on buying a truck, but if I were to become an o/o, then I might consider a 13 speed auto shift.
A note to the anti-auto crowd

I drive an automatic 2006 century. I HATED it....at first.
I still miss my 10 speed but I climb hills better and i get an average of 7.3mpg since I've had this over the 6.1mpg if i was lucky on my Columbia.
Went through Chicago and new York in this, and i do like not having to worry about shifting when someone in front of me decided to slow down rapidly.
I trained on a manual, I tested on a manual, I prefer a manual, but ill drive whatever my company gives me. The auto isn't bad, its a two pedal and it backs just fine now that I've learned how to back it slow and easy.

gee, I never complained when I got out of that '68 freightshaker COE back in 72...
Hammer166, Giggles the Original, DrtyDiesel and 2 others Thank this. -
about 4 weeks after I was out of that truck, the company said the mechanics found many of my missing pens, pencils, books, pads, rulers, etc. I hit a bump on the GW Bridge one day, and my briefcase went into the air with the greatest of ease. -
I actually still enjoy "gear jamming" after all these years. something about the feel of the power. but, my 4 wheeler is an automatic.
DrtyDiesel and stabob Thank this. -
This kenny car is the last truck i will ever buy and it is a thirteen speed that auto just didn't have it when it counted. I know this may be foolish but that volvo auto shift pulling a reefer load just didn't have it when it counted, and you are welcome.

I love my 09 Columbia with a 6 speed Allison in it.I was told my new truck will be an International 8600 with a 13sp.It was fun while it lasted, but I'll drive anything they give me especially if it's new.

If I ever buy a new truck, I will spec it with a 13sp AUTO. If I was to buy another used truck, Auto vs Manual is not a priority, engine, gearing, and condition is much more important.

I really didnt like the thing the button shift told dispatch to put in oldest rig in the fleet if they could it worked for awhile ( an old fld like it plenty runninoregon then it had problems) they said i had the option to run a newer rig with something called an i-shift, i tendered my resignation and went back otr from regional........
To clarify i like to pick my gears, and not by pushing the cursed button that only decides to work on its own choosing.its was like riding a trail horse in the kentucky derby pretty much not many good things to say about them autos......Last edited: May 7, 2012

We had an 18 Spd auto in a winch truck once. I thought it was the cats ### until one day I was 192000 lbs on a lease road in the middle of a 10 percent grade and it went beep beep beep and kicked into neutral. Only thing we could figure was my speed wasn't sufficient at the bottom of the hill and it couldn't shift fast enough to keep up with the loss of speed. Now remember that was on a rough ### lease road where we were lucky to get 15 mph. It happened more than once and when the #### thing went out we put a regular 18 in it. That was a good truck after the swap.
