A question that is NOT being addressed about the ELD..

As an owner operator I come close to regulating pay.

Broker/ Shipper offers me a certain amount to haul load from point A to point B, I say NO I won't haul your load for that. I will for such and such though.

They can respond in one of 3 ways, no, okay or let's meet at this number. In a free market economy that's how business is done.

Getting the government involved with more regulating is the last thing I want.

 

I'd argue that's contract negotiations different from what a company will pay a driver.... and I agree we don't need government dictating more as to how we will run our businesses

 

My ELD woke me up at 4am and made me drive today!!! Wait, no it didn't.
It did it yesterday, tho!!! Wait, no it didn't. I got my own butt out of bed and drove to get my load delivered on time...
This morning, I had an extremely refreshing 13hrs off duty, and I'm only driving 9hrs today. Stupid ELD....

 

Which is why I'm no longer a company driver. How many company drivers negotiate their pay? Not many, as you know.

 

Ok... So then what's the big deal???

Other than I guess some will just now have to learn a new way to cheat the new system.

yup... And less pressure to run passed safe if you can point to a simple eLog vs being told to do it different on paper.

And no way to get extra miles to help with the income... (As you already mentioned)... So the only other ways to differentiate is to offer better benefits, equipment, or wage...

Yes, others work the system to their advantage so we need to as well.

Not saying we need to be happy with HOS or work towards changes to make it better... But we are also working with a National Rule... Covering many different types of Drivers... Newbie to Experienced... Some with Comman Sense and some not so much. It's hard to make something simple and easy to monitor for All Drivers.
