Thanks for your advice. The reason I took this job is that it's a dedicated route and I'm paid a percentage of the gross revenue (which is reliably high for the route) and it's a change from my former job. I'd worked full-time for a publicly traded agribusiness company (you probably use their products every day) for the past eighteen months and wanted out of the corporate system. I had quit with a few months of savings built up but no job so I thought I had time to take the pick of the litter, but some financial emergencies arose and depleted my savings. Even so, I didn't realize how hectic and "bottom of the barrel" dry van trucking is. When hauling horses, people give you space out of respect for the animals, and when hauling grain many people give you space out of respect of you being a farmer, or close to it. The company I work for is small and has a great owner, and the secretary calls us drivers every day to make sure we're doing okay and even prays for us, but holy cow is the actual work a pain. The places I pick up and deliver to treat us drivers like third-class citizens and most of the driving is in heavy traffic, or at least will be until winter with all the road construction.
Alas, I told myself that I was getting out of trucking for good, but here I am once again.
