My buddy has twin 12-71 Detroits in his 58 Hatteras Motoryacht we went for a little cruise on last weekend.

He just bought it about 6 months ago and has been working on it bringing it up to par.

Mufflers were leaking so he took them out of the system being its about $6000 for a pair.

It ROARS I'll grab a video next time we go out.

 

All right I got bored after 5 minutes.

 

That's not a Detroit,,,sorry, sounds like a Cummins. Here's your "Buzzin' Dozen". Notice a difference?

 

I became immune to that noise at an early age. As a lad, going to the carnival, everyone ran for the Tilt-a-Whirl, I ran over to the generator trailer to see where that awful noise was coming from,, where some 4 cylinder Detroit wailed away, making it all happen,,

 

Thats gotta be a ‘65-‘67 because of bird wing hood ornament and no side markers on fenders. ‘65 was first year for the tilt hood narrow nose 358 and the bird wing hood pull ornament they put on all conv. ‘68 was the first year for the side marker lights on the fenders. ‘67 the wide tilt hood 359 (like yours) came out. ( 7 serial numbers from when my 351 was built.)
281= butterfly hood single drive axle or tandem with single drive axle and one dead pusher.
351= butterfly hood twin screw
288= narrow tilt hood single drive or tandem with dead pusher.
358= narrow tilt hood twin screw
289= wide tilt hood single drive or tandem with dead pusher
359= wide tilt hood twin screw.

 

Anybody want to guess who really built the first Freightliners?
Look close at logo. It says Freightways.

 

For years there were 10 missing serial numbers in the Peterbilt sequence. Till recently. Mind blower!
