I grew up on welfare too. Dad up and decided that the family life wasn't for him. Left his young wife behind with 5 kids. I'm the 2nd of 5. I started working at age 11. I worked in the grocery stores 3rd shift through high school.

I got a job as a laborer on a construction crew. My first check, I went to the flea market and bought a framing hammer and a nail apron. $14. Showed up to work Monday with tools and the boss was so impressed that I bought tools that he taught me the trade.

The ironic thing about everything was that the goobermint refused to help my mom because she refused to quit her part time job. Mom told them that our situation was temporary. They gave us $25/month food stamps. Didn't matter, mom was right. It was temporary.

I've heard every excuse in the book as to why people are in the situation they're in. Some say that they never had an opportunity. I ask if they had access to public school. If they say, "YES", I tell them that was their opportunity. If you want it, go get it...I'm not going to get it for you. I will tell you how to get it, I will show you where it's at. But if you are unwilling to put forth effort, I will leave you to rot. It is not a Man's place to wipe the arse of a perfectly healthy adult.

Don't those thing depreciate in value fast when the newest version releases? It might be when that happens the second newest version of the phone suddenly becomes affordable?

I won't claim to have read more than the first few posts, but I'd be bet that trainee ends up becoming a professional driver. Which makes me sad and pissed off at the same time.

When I think back to riding along with my dad as a kid I don't remember ever seeing him at work in a short sleeve shirt, ever. I don't remember ever seeing him in public with a short sleeve shirt for that matter.

When I see these modern day CDL school professionals walking around looking like they haven't shaved in a week, smelling like they haven't showered in two, gut hanging out of a ratty t-shirt and flip flops I wonder what happened to the us all.

When did this become the last stop for those that could do nothing else?

when the CDL Mills opened up to all those that apply and get federal monies, and companies started doing in-house training...(getting TONS OF federal monies as well)

i blame companies for not having a "dress code" for professionals, in ANY industry. (JB Hunt for the longest time, had one, and DID NOT ALLOW beards..!) we ALL are advertisers for our companies, and should be proud of our appearances. many decades ago, when I WAS in a driving school, (long before CDL was a glimmer in the feds eye), my instructor told the class,
you represent your company, and as such, are basically the ONLY PERSON a customer see's as most if not ALL times, only phone conversations take place for the loads.

well i can assure you, that the MANY times i was able to stay on a customers property over night, when i jumped out of bed, i had a battery powered electric shaver, and i cleaned up my face, and splashed on some after shave, and oh by the way, i usually wear Dickies brand of work clothing, and i'd go inside and be all fresh, clean and neat....

i work nights now, and have been for dozens of years, i still wear Dickies, CLEAN Red Wing Boots, and cuz i see no actual customers at my drops, i DO wear colored pocket T-shirts, that Are CLEAN each night, and when they get a TINY tear or the collar gets out of shape,,,,,,,I BUY ALL NEW ONES, so like every 2 months.......

i do not "dress to impress", but i like being, CLEAN, NEAT, PROFESSIONAL, and relatively SHARP at all times...

the only time I WEAR flip flops..???

is when i had to use a truck stop shower........

Would you think about leaving town with no money available? A grown man with a CDL? Incredible. My dad died when I was 8. I started working after school at 13. No sympathy.

It's ironic you mention "The Last Stop."

Because people that get into driving just for a means to make money, go through it or wind up some trully miserable bast ages.

I lost mine. But then why I started coming to these states that are filled with yankees, I bought another pair, cause it's pretty well known they do all manner of weird stuff in the shower.

The last time I was in an orientation class for an OTR company was in the 90's. Probably half of those guys were one step away from being homeless. The question of the day was, how long until I can get an advance.

    Maybe I'm just old.

I almost walked away from a psycho trainer in Milwaukee. I could have gotten home and eaten off my credit card.

I stuck it out, but I wish I hadn't because the job was a ridiculous split shift layover hotel thing. It's no wonder the trainer was nuts from doing it himself.
