So it was luck that I sacrificed to get where I am? No I don't think so.
Ok, let me rephrase that. There is a bit of luck involved in exactly how I am doing now. There was no luck in my deciding to not blow all my tax return on a 3D TV (like a neighbor did), or buy both the latest gaming consoles and literally a dozen games for each.

The vast bulk of the reason most people I've ever interacted with are poor is because they choose to be by their habits of purchasing and/or getting in a low wadge job and never trying to get a better job.

 

What would you be doing if it weren't for trucking?

 

I honestly don't know.
I probably would have went back and started an apprentice is some construction field. I'm not fond of the feast/famine cycle of house building, but stuff like plumbing or electrical I could make a life out of I think.

There are tons of blue collar jobs out there, if only one would deal with the crappy apprentice programs most have.

That's the hard part....the apprenticeship programs, internships, etc. Free labor basically. If you've been so used to earning money, that's a tough adjustment.

 

It is, but there is very little luck involved. Hard work and sacrifice sure, but little luck.

 

That guy in the video was lucky he got the rookie.

The last time I ever asked the trainee what in the world happened to you I picked up a two hour lecture interspersed with copious tears and crying about how the children will not be able to eat much this weekend after the problem (Bridge strike on US 20 in a upstate NY Village that has barn sized signs for miles on every inbound road telling truckers all about it)

I consider that a lesson to keep my mouth shut and not try to play reporter investigating why someone is sleeping on that floor. You would think the Owner or Manager would have something to say about that. (Trespassing among other things)

In my time we had Mobile Chapels. And plenty of wheels to clean among other things. I even recall a sort of clerking services to boot. A little paperwork in ordinary forms while the driver got a nap (Double checked of course)

True.

Alcoholism and drug addiction also play a part. As does mental illness. As does committing crimes- going to prison getting out then being unemployable.

The driver was being a dick for no reason. All he had to do was say yes or no. He isn't proving anything by standing up to the border patrol. They could have done him like they did that Swift driver in another video. The border patrol broke the glass and jerked him out of the truck.
