Actually, ABF is very flexible with their casuals. You tell them when you can work and they go by that.

go with ABF, UPS Freight is good, but working under the NMFA contract is better. UPS freight start you off at a very low rate, and it takes a long time to get to top rate.

if you go with ABF though, you will want to take as much work as possible ASAP at the beginning of every quarter, so you will get your days in for your Health & Welfare credit. so you "should" live by the phone until you get in your 36 days, iirc.

It's a private UPS funded "company 401K type pension". They are not in the NMFA.

Very true...You will start out at a much higher wage at ABF. I think ABF takes 2 years to hit top pay, while UPS Freight takes 3 years.

The biggest thing i would concern myself with is the pension plans. Word on the street is Central States which ABF is in could be in trouble, especially if YRC goes down. Not sure how that would effect the guys who are coming up. To my knowledge UPS has their own pension plan. Maybe someone else has more insight than i. Glad to hear they are ready to put you on. Congradulations!

One last consideration: Big R ( YRC )recently tried to mod the contract with it's workers and cut bennies. This left ABF ( and others ) holding the bag on full pay and bennies and big R in a solid position to cut rates and starve out ABF. Don't know where that went.....but makes a point ( to me ) :

I'd pick brown.....for security only. Brown isn't going anywhere. They are solid. Might cost you a couple of bucks today but worth it in the future. Nothing worse than putting 12,15,20 years somewhere only to find out your standing on jello....

And I'd heed the Admiral....another vaild point.

I'd go with upsf. Abf recently voted against a paycut. They are treading water and could go either direction at any time

upsf, would be my choice, but both are great as others have said.

it would also depend on commute time etc etc, there are other variables, but with the info you gave id say ups all day long.

It's kinda funny I work for FedEx ground and every time I go to upsf I'm in my FedEx uniform. But anyway I have no experience in a tt so they wanted me to work evenings for a few weeks practicing in the yard backing drop/hook and whatever else. So I was going to work for upsf in the evening and FedEx during the day. The TM's boss said it would be a conflict of interest so that was a no go. The TM must like me because he said well I can't give you part time so how about full time. I said sure that would be fantastic. So he talked to his boss about that and he's cool with it and now just waiting on conformation hopefully tomorrow
