I was always under the impression that ABF was the place to work for when I was in LTL, as far as the casual to full time hiring process in my experience it sucked, I understood it because it was a way of the company to get freight moved with part timers that they didn't have to give benefits to, however I felt that it created a negative work environment because on one hand you had the casuals busting their butts and pissed off wondering if they ever were going to make it to full time, and then you had full timers who felt annomossity towards the casuals because in a sense they took work away from them especially overtime, atleast thats what I observed when I was a casual at a carrier I worked for at one time, if ABF is adopting a Conway/XPO business model as was stated by one poster, if that model includes hiring people on full time with benefits in 60 days why is that such a bad thing? The new employees can pay their so called dues by working on the extra boards and stuff, their incentive for staying will be the benefits and knowing they are full time and as they gain senority they will be able to bid better runs/routes whatever the case may be, non union LTL carriers are already doing this and it seems to work for the most part.
