I've never had to take a pretrip test because I was grandfathered in but I do remember the book I read said you can use a check list if you choose. If that's still true today then there's no excuse why you can't pass any pretrip.
The best way I've found over the years is to get a routine and stick to it. Use a flashlight even in daylight because you can't see under the cab and trailer to inspect all the goodies down there. Use your hands to touch items like lug nuts. Make sure all your lights and reflectors are clean because you need to get down to that detail. And above all DO NOT assume anything and check it. -
I passed mine today missed 2---forgot to check of all things my belts and the U bolts----DUH
Like said before practice alot----everytime you go up to the truck do a pre trip----study all the terms in you cdl book
Cracked-Worn-Frayed-loose-broken-missing parts---be specific point out cotter pins and bolts are there all lug nuts are there and not dameged--blah blah blah
Good luck -
