He was a brand new employee and had no idea he could request a different trainer. Yes...he expected used equipment, but he also expected a road worthly vehicle. I would think that a truck is inspected before being issued to a new driver. Brake issues, a 5th wheel that won't disengage and a burnt up clutch brake isn't my idea of a vehicle that is ready for the road. What would safety department do ? As far as get involved...he is very capable of doing most any repair himself and willing. But absence of tools and parts would make that impossible. About me....I have been blessed through the years with various driving jobs with very small companies and paid well and took care of there people. I am also a full time firefighter in a large fire department. I am involved with training people to operate fire apparatus. It was my suggestion for my son to go to driving school after be completed his commitment in the Armed Services. I, myself had no idea he would encounter a company like this when he completed school. I have taught him lots of things in his life. He is very reserved and not the type to complain about anything. So you can imagine that it came as a shock when he began to tell me of his experiences once he began with Werner. I treat recruit firefighters with respect and go out of my way to make them feel welcome and part of the team. I cannot sign on to the idea that people should be expected to eat poop, and hope things get better down the road. Accountability and responsibility should come into play at some point....you think ?

They take new drivers, pre hired straight out of driving schools. They put them with a trainer and effect create a team driver situation.
This is now a common practice with many companies today. The company I am now with pays me a half a team rate for me-but since the other driver has little experience, he gets 16 cents a mile-or about 360 dollars a week. They then run us like a full-fledged team coast to coast. The new drivers I have had are not at all ready for a team operation, and most cannot shift or find their way around. It is just another scam to move freight cheaply at the expense of the veteran driver who fears for his life and has to get the trainee out of bad situations, and they further expect the veteran driver to be responsible for everything (at regular pay). Needless to say, I am moving on again.pattyj Thanks this. -
From what Raymond says Werner has changed ALOT since I was there back in 2003.I had an axcellent 2 trainers.Only reason I didnt make it thru the entire training with the first trainer was because he wanted to go back to being a company driver. So I was given another and he was just as good.Once I got done with training I was issued a brand new purple century and absolutely loved it.I received good miles the first yr but progressively went down hill from then on and stayed 2 more yrs and finally I had more then enough anger and stress everytime payday came and all the swapping splitting and sitting at the Omaha terminal. With todays economy, all the laws,I don't doubt one bit Werner is doing this along with almost every company out there.

You are absolutely correct. Trucking as a whole has gone down-hill since the 90's. It is not fun anymore. Those who read this-you should talk to a driver who has been around since the 60,s or 80's. It is a totally different indusry today-but not for the better.

I'm surprised the trk was'nt inspected like it should have been.Werners main concern back in the day was SAFETY.Werner did'nt issue him any tools either? They did me.Never did I have any trks like your boy got and never would I have even taken it out of the yard untill its to my satisfaction.Hope your boy learned from this and do a complete and thoural pretrip on trk and trailer before leaving the termnal.Remember, its his CDL on the line .
-
Why should Werner treat your son good? CDL graduates are turned out of the mills everyday and he is nothing more than a number to them.
-
He along with every driver is just a number. You quit not a problem we have 10 drivers to take your place.Unless companies are really desparate for drivers, they'll never ask you to come back.
-
That open door policy is just a come on to lure the next victim in to receive more subsidy. You go to the top dog about issues, that goes in one ear and out the other. You'd be better off talking to the wall.Companies dont care about the drivers concerns and never will .Their slogan is,if you're not happy then quit. They could care less.As they see it,another one bites the dust.
