Boardhauler - thanks, I'm having a real good time with the truck overall. Like I stated I've been reluctant to the paccar engines, but the warranty got me into it, now I believe I went the right route.

My fuel mileage went from 5.2 to "7.2"!! Pulling a skateboard, the PACCAR engine sounds like a det once you start getting on the throttle then it's like a Cat past the 1500 rpms at highway speeds. still no issues, no oil leaks/consumption. The 579 is a gorgeous truck, comfortable and spacious, solid and very good suspension. A bit of rocking in high winds but must be due to my roof fairing or the front "4" airbag front axle.

I will say I recommend the setup I got, heck even the auto. The engine should be no less than a fact 500/1850 on the 12.9, or wait for PACCAR to launch their 15 ltr some time in '15 or 2016.

If you're looking to purchase I can give you a lead, send me a message and I'll tell you all about it. Good luck.

Thanks Lucar! That is a totally gorgeous truck!!!

I'm actually thinking about taking a totally opposite tack- paying cash for a 1999 FD. My significant other is a school teacher & wants me to take a summer off & go traveling with her. I'm giving it some serious consideration, I'm old enough to consider slowing down some.

Only problem is if I do it I'll be even more jealous when I see guys like you & Kona roll by. lol

OK. Straight answers. Rockers/shafts, IVA's. Yes, the updated parts are available to repair the common failures. Have tech review s/n.
Common issues. Accert BXS and MXS. Engine harnesses will fail. Replacement will be required. Most common is failed actuator oil pressure sensor and solenoid. Pre charge cooler diverter valve and core leaks. Injectors wear out. Replace all 6. Best bang for the buck. No kidding. BXS was first. MXS was next. MXS has improved software. And one piece IVA housings. The better choice I think. The NXS. Stay away from the cat engine with a spark plug. I've spent many hours and someone's money troubleshooting and repairing these engines. I must say that this was Cat's first attempt at regeneration. Then they walked away from trucks. The Cat regeneration on equipment engines have few issues now.
Of course, I am referring to off road applications with my next statement ;) You can set a 6NZ to put the power down. I have rebuilt and set up pull competition 6NZ's. They ironically got better fuel mileage then stock. Easier to drive too. Not rushing to make the next shift. Because you know you have more than enough power. Run low rpm if your tech sets the engine retarded (referring to engine static timing.) If the tech sets the engine advanced. Run high rpm's. You will get lower pyrometer temps when advanced. When retarded. The pyrometer temps will be higher. But more grunt. (unfortunately at the cost of less engine/turbo/exhaust manifold life.) Performance settings are dynamic. You will have to drive the engine accordingly. The West coast has lots of good techs that can steer you in the right direction. Hope this helps a little. Good luck.

I definitely want a 579 after reading about them. But sticker shock has it on hold for now. I just dont want to step up to a brand new truck right now. I looked to see what used ones were going for. I didnt see any for under $105k. At least not one that met my specs.

Maybe in 2 - 3 yrs I'll be ready for a brand new truck. Just not now. I'll stick with a $30k special for now.

I need one with 250 - 260" wheel base. I prefer the Cummins with either 13 or 18spd. And need highway gears. 2.90 - 3.25 rears.

I'm sure the PaccarMX is leaps and bounds better then the 2010 386 that I test drove with a 435hp Paccar motor. It was gutless and at the time I was reading more nightmare stories about them than guys with C15 DPF motors.

$108k... I didnt pay that much for my first house. LOL
