Ok guys back to this thread. Who makes a good radiator that can handle big horses. I've maxed out the 4 row core from peterbilt and need better. I talked to Detroit radiator last year and planned on using theirs cause they said it could handle up to 1000 horse but after reading bad reviews I'm undecided again. Who has a good reputation with a good product.

i have had good luck with my Detroit rad's. I still use a 4 row core but with more cooling fins per square inch. it makes a big difference. so much so I have to run a winter front or put a pc of card board with a 1 ft hole cut in the middle. never get above 205deg. on pull grossing over 100000lbs. if you deal with Detroit rad and you have a w900 kw make sure they install the (splash neck) in the filler cap neck.

    Tmtbob Thanks this.

another trick to try is put a 180 and a 190 t-stat in. it works well. keeps the temp at a more steady average. was taught that little trick by a well known boy from down under.

The engine is engineered to run 190 degree thermostats, the fan should be off by at least 205 degrees, the engine pieces are then at maximum proformance, running it cold will cause all kinds of problems that will decrees the life of the engine. like carbon on the piston wearing the liners.

agree with part of what you stated. but with a 180 and a 190 t-stat it stays at a more steady temp which is better than going up and down in temp constantly. the more you keep it at a steady temp the better the (engine pieces) perform with less expansion and contraction= less cracking and less failures of said pieces. just because the (engineers) built it that way does not mean it is better.

The fan should shut off and the thermostats should stay wide open and the temp should not go low enough to have the thermostats engage. I have takes thousands of engines apart and can tell if the engine was running cold from the carbon buildup and the wear in the cylinders, build up in the exhaust ports. All things that hurt fuel economy and longevity.
Back to the original post, the water pumps are and have always bean a problem. two things that excelerate their demise is the lack of a water filter and the use of DCA4 additive.
    Just a thought!
