With England, you can use the off-duty driving as long as you arent dispatched to a trip. Once you do your empty call and have not been assigned a new load, your golden. I just make sure i put "personal conveyence" in as a note.

one thing no one has explained is.... lets say i log 14 hrs on duty but only 8.5 are driving the rest are unloading and reloading.. Am i still able to do 8 hr sleeper berth and finish my 2.5 hrs driving before taking the 2 hrs off or is that in violation??

Did I miss something ? It's my understanding ( backed by q.c ) that yes 8/2 minimum split , but any greater combo ok, I prefer half or whole hrs for simplicity and once I bump 11 or 14 in the given day I have to finish what's owed to the break as 14 don't stop.

    OR

I'm on at 8am....arrrive at shipper at 10, hold and load for 2 hrs that I put in the bunk and at 9pm or 10pm ( depending on 11 or 14 ) I owe the bunk 8 more. right?

Yes you can. Once you do the 8 hours you put on hold the 14 hour rule and go in the split sleeper mode. Before you go back to normal running you have to take a 10 hour break and everything is reset but your 70.

Long story short the 8 SB is not included in the 14, but the rest is.

You come out of the 8 sleeper (14 starts) and work 2.5, break 2, drive 8.5 must be in the 14 hour rule. In other words you can't take more than a 3 hour break or take the 2 hour break and work more than 1 hour on duty not driving.
That gives you time to pretrip, fuel, and check in with a customer and not violate.

To simplify the law, keep SB at 8/2, keep driving time added to 11 or less, never work more than 1 hour on duty not driving between 8's and you'll be okay. Then 10 hrs SB to cancel. (of course less driving time increases on duty not driving the same amount)

Split sleeper should just be used in rare cases to complete a trip and maybe pick up. Then take 10 off. Most companies frown on it cause it makes them scratch their heads too! :)

I dont think you guys understand what i'm asking........... ok in a 14 hr period - 5.5 hrs on duty not driving ( pti, fuel, multiple stop deliveries and pickups) 8.5 hrs on duty driving equals 14 hrs Even tho you didnt use the whole 11, you wouldnt qualify to stop for only 8 because you used 14 strait with no break! correct????

It doesn't matter what you do prior if driving time was less than 11 hours. If you get at least 8 hours in the SB the 14 resets if you want to go into the split sleeper mode.

Remember the DOT doesn't care how long you work on duty not driving. You can work 70 straight hours on the dock as far as they are concerned. All they care about is that you don't drive over 11 hours in a 14 hour period. After 11 hours driving you need a 10 hour break. Any less driving time can be broke up by an 8 hour break and the 11 driving can be completed.
