What is your favorite type of driving and what discouraged you with dry vans? I get the sense you like tankers. I saw your endorsement for a number of tanker companies in one of your posts. I would be interested in that type of work but I believe most of your list except Schneider don't offer an apprenticeship program. Choosing a company with an apprenticeship program makes too much sense to pass up free money as it offers a nice supplemental income up to two years. Your recommendation for J B Hunt offers an attractive additional income but should I have any concerns given it only offers dry van?

I just don't like dry van trucking and could always make much more money pulling reefers, flatbeds, hazmat tankers.
Some companies such as Old Dominion Freight Line is dry van, but not like regular dry van because you're pulling doubles and making well over $100G a year.
Intermodal is also dry van except the box is detached from the chassis, except in rare occasions where an intermodal might be tanks or reefers. The chassis is like a trailer frame that the box is attached to. Intermodal you have to deal with the ports and union workers which can and will make your life miserable.Last edited: Jan 26, 2026

If you want to deal with apprenticeship programs, then just do it.

This is an intermodal chassis with the box being either installed or removed.

Grateful for everyone's time and perspective. Better to ask seasoned professionals for advice rather than going through a lot of heartache.

J B Hunt also does flatbed work:
